Shadowing has always been my favourite technique when it comes to improving my speaking skills in English. It is because this is the thing that helped me the most to be able to communicate fluently and clearly. In this way, you can get caught up, namely immerse yourself in an English atmosphere and feel like you are also one of those native speakers even if you are not. However, most students fail to realise the paramount significance of immersion in the language and do nothing, but learn the sample answers for the IELTS speaking questions. Even though I totally agree that preparing for the questions beforehand helps you to be aware of what is gonna happen during your speaking exam and assist you to gain confidence, it is not a proper approach all the time. Let's take my case as an example, I used to hate speaking so much to the point that I used to procrastinate my speaking homework, and I was reluctant to say a single word in English let alone practising speaking for hours. However, two things literally saved my life (i mean improved my speaking😁). The first one was forcing myself to speak in English, especially in front of those who I am not comfortable with, and the second one was imitating the speech of native speakers - video shadowing. By doing these two things, I started loving the speaking section of IELTS than any other one. By applying the former technique, I gained confidence and started to lose my fear of making mistakes because the number one stumbling block that most students face during their language acquisition journey is being afraid of making mistakes not knowing that humans are liable to make mistakes, and it is totally fine. When it comes to the latter method, I shadowed some videos at first just because I was assigned to do it. Thus, I paid my attention not to the quality, but to the quantity of my imitation, which was an absolute nightmare. However, with the passage of time, I started to come across some videos that truly interested me, and that was the time when I finally found the so-called "key ingredient" to make me love speaking!😅 I was so into those videos that I used to shadow one video a day and that I made a habit of it, and this habit is still a part and parcel of my daily life🌝 So I just wanna wrap this post by saying this. Just start doing the things that you hate just for the sake of your goals in the beginning of any kind of journey because you are highly likely to love and enjoy them eventually! It just takes time and patience! It happens just at the right time spontaneously without letting you know! Just trust the process!
