🤖 AI Models Are So Smart They Can't Pretend to Be Bad Students
Researchers at Drexel University tried to make language models act like students with different levels of algebra knowledge. But simply telling them to
"answer like a struggling student" wasn't enough to make them play the role convincingly.
✏️ Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite, Claude Haiku 4.5, and GPT-5.4-mini were given 379 algebra problems and assigned five different student personas. Yet they failed at the task: whether the model was an "A student" or a "poor student," its accuracy stayed between 96.8% and 100%.
The issue is that the model already knows the correct answer and struggles to suppress its own capabilities. So the authors split the task into two stages: first, a separate algorithm models what a student knows and where they are likely to make mistakes; then, an LLM explains the student's answer. This produced more plausible performance differences: the "near-expert" student scored 85.2% accuracy, the average student 57.8%, and the struggling student 44.1%.
👨 The authors acknowledge that they have not yet compared their virtual "students" with real ones. So for now, this is more a method for teaching AI to make believable mistakes than an accurate model of how humans learn.

Social isolation has long been linked to alcohol misuse. Men tend to drink more than usual when they're alone, while women tend to drink less. Researchers identified a brain mechanism in mice that could explain the difference.
⚙️ To test this, the mice started out living in groups of three or four. After a few days, they were moved into individual cages and kept alone for up to two weeks.
For one hour each day, the animals could choose between two bottles: one with water, one with a 15% alcohol solution. Over time, isolated males drank more alcohol, while isolated females drank less. As the mice made their choice, the researchers tracked which neural pathways were active.
They found that social isolation increased activity in male mice along a pathway connecting the amygdala, which processes emotion, to the prefrontal cortex, which helps control decision-making. In females, activity in the same pathway decreased.
❗️ When researchers stimulated this pathway, even males living in groups drank more. When they suppressed it, isolated males drank less alcohol. Human brains and social behavior are far more complex, so researchers will need to confirm the findings in people. But identifying this pathway could help researchers develop more effective treatments for addiction.

Researchers in Denmark came up with a way to make math more engaging for students: teaching fractions and percentages on the basketball court.
309 students ages 11–13 were split into three groups. One group had a weekly "basketball math" lesson that combined sports practice with calculations. For example, students would shoot baskets, calculate their shooting percentage, write it as a fraction, and compare their results with classmates. A second group had regular PE classes, while a third played regular basketball.
After two months, students in the experimental program performed 15% better on fraction problems and 5.4% better on other math tasks. The control groups showed no significant improvement. The researchers believe that the mix of movement and competition made the lessons more engaging.
❗️ There may be a simpler explanation, though: the students in the experimental group simply got more practice with fractions. Still, the researchers suggest making one in every five math lessons more active.
"I am convinced that sport and physical activity can open up mathematics for pupils who are not otherwise engaged by the subject," says study co-author Jacob Wienecke.
