J Thomas Heflin as a congressmen for Alabama. He was a strong populist Democrat who backed labor rights and regulation of railroads. He was also a major backer of the 1901 Alabama constitution which held rid blacks of the vote. He would later become US Senator in the 1920s before being sacked by the states leaders for opposing Catholic Al Smith in 1928.

Two tier justice from the American legal system as always. We’ve seen numerous cases across the country where non-White felons get off with rape and even murder. In the same state it’s likely a mom will get away with murdering 3 of her children. But we have to draw the line at drunken two teens fornicating because of a two year age gap.
