In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII introduced a rule that century years (like 1700, 1800, 1900) would only be leap years when divisible by 400; creating the Gregorian calendar. The Ethiopian Calendar The last month, Pagume, has one additional day in a leap year, bringing the total days in the year to 366. However,  the Ethiopian calendar doesn't have an exception for century years. This means the leap years occur slightly more frequently, causing the Ethiopian calendar to drift further out of sync with the Gregorian calendar over longer periods.
