Most readily available 5.56 ammunition is dependent on velocity for effective terminal ballistics. M193 and M855 will fragment and yaw, which is what creates their wounding potential. These effects are not realized under a velocity of about 2500 fps, after which the projectile will just punch a more clean .22 caliber hole in soft tissue.
For this reason, AR barrel length matters. AR pistols and SBRs have been in vogue but as 5.56 will fall below 2500 fps within as little as 50 yards or fewer depending on barrel length, short barrels and 5.56 don't mix.
7.62x39 and 300 Blackout, which are both much larger, slower moving and lower pressure cartridges, will reach their velocity potential in a shorter distance. They're what you want in a short platform.
