The electrons frοm a radioactive source pass through a magnetic field in the spectrometer that curves their trajectories by different degrees-the higher the energy of the electrons, the smaller the curvature.
They finally strike a photographic plate at various points, where they leave a mark.
Spectrometer for analysing
the β-ray spectrum
Originals, Otto Hahn and Lise Meitner, ca. 1911
These spectrometers were used by Hahn, Meitner and von Baryer to investigate the energy spectrum of electrons emitted in β-decay.
The window was subsequently positioned on one of the front sides, as with this exhibit. The counter tubes were the most sensitive measuring devices of their time for the electrical detection of α-, β- and γ-rays.
Geiger-Müller counter tube with side window
Original, Otto Pressler company, 1938
The Geiger-Müller counter tube from the early 1930s bad a thin mica window in the outer mantle, through which the less penetrative α- and β-particles could also enter the tube and be measured.
They intensified the ionisation through a gas filled tube In 1913, Geiger improved this method by inventing the needle counter: this new device reacted to a- and B-particles entering the tube through a small opening.
The needle counter included a sharply pointed needle as the inner electrode. This was the predecessor of the Geiger-Müller counter.
Geiger needle counter for detecting individual a- and B-particles
Originals, Hans Geiger estate, pre-1930
In 1908, Geiger and Rutherford developed a measuring device to electrically register ionising radiation.
If ionising radiation penetrates the tube, it ejects electrons from the gas atoms. These accelerate towards the wire, ionising other atoms and thereby creating an ciectron avalanche. The current produces a voltage pulse at the resistor, which is registered by the counting mechanism

A counter tube is a gas-filled metal tube with a taut wire running along its axis. The voltage applied between the wire and the outer mantle generates an electric field
