A new study found that most people can learn to use an extra third thumb attached to their hand with just one minute of practice. The "Third Thumb" was created by designer Danielle Clode as a wearable robotic appendage that is controlled by toe pressure sensors.
Over 600 volunteers tried using the Third Thumb at a science exhibition and over 90% were able to move it purposefully after a brief training. When asked to complete tasks like picking up objects, over half the participants succeeded.
The study showed both younger and older adults, as well as left and right-handed individuals, performed similarly. Researchers hope the Third Thumb could one day help people with limited dexterity. The findings suggest wearable robotic aids have potential to be adopted quickly and across diverse users with only minimal instruction.
