What exactly is a “deep state” — and when does bureaucratic power become a democratic problem? The term is often used to describe alleged networks of military, intelligence, security, bureaucratic and informal actors exercising influence beyond normal political oversight. But there is no universally accepted definition, and the concept remains contested. From Turkey’s derin devlet and the 1996 Susurluk crash to debates about Egypt’s post-2011 institutions and the use of the term in US politics, the deeper issue is not simply whether unelected officials hold power. Modern governments depend on bureaucratic expertise and delegated authority. The democratic test is whether that power remains transparent, accountable and subordinate to constitutional institutions — or operates through secretive networks beyond effective civilian control. The real question is not only who holds power, but who holds power accountable. #DeepState #Democracy #PoliticalScience #Governance #Bureaucracy #CivilMilitaryRelations

Lung adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype of lung cancer — and it doesn’t affect only smokers. It often begins in the outer parts of the lungs and may cause few noticeable symptoms in its early stages. Smoking remains a major risk factor, but air pollution, second-hand smoke, radon, asbestos and other exposures can also contribute. Persistent cough, breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up blood, unexplained weight loss or unusual fatigue should not be ignored. These symptoms do not necessarily mean cancer, but persistent or unexplained symptoms deserve medical evaluation. #LungCancer #LungAdenocarcinoma #CancerAwareness #LungHealth #HealthAwareness #EarlyDetection #AirPollution #PublicHealth #CancerCare #upsccs

What do our roads say about us? Civic virtue is not tested only in institutions or moments of crisis. It appears in ordinary choices—giving way, controlling anger, helping an injured stranger, following rules and respecting another person’s right to safety. Better highways may reflect development. But how we behave on them reflects our civic character. The road is not just infrastructure. It is a test of citizenship. #CivicVirtue #Ethics #RoadSafety #CivicSense #Citizenship #UPSC #GS4 #EthicsInEverydayLife #India

Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2026 Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford have been honoured for their contributions to the microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation — work that transformed how economists think about inflation, recessions, interest rates and central-bank policy. Their central insight: the economy is shaped by millions of forward-looking decisions. Households decide whether to spend or save based on expectations about the future. Businesses make pricing and investment decisions in much the same way. This means expectations, interest rates and credible central-bank communication can directly influence economic outcomes. Their work helped shape modern New Keynesian macroeconomics and the frameworks policymakers use to understand economic shocks and stabilisation. #NobelPrize #NobelPrize2026 #Economics #EconomicSciences #RobertHall #MichaelWoodford #Macroeconomics #NewKeynesian

Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences 2026 Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford have been awarded the 2026 Prize in Economic Sciences for their work on “microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.” Their research explores a fundamental economic question: how do the decisions, expectations and behaviour of individuals and firms shape the wider economy? By connecting microeconomic behaviour with macroeconomic outcomes, their work has helped deepen our understanding of economic fluctuations, monetary policy and stabilisation. #NobelPrize #NobelPrize2026 #Economics #EconomicSciences #RobertHall #MichaelWoodford #Macroeconomics #Microeconomics #MonetaryPolicy #Economy #EconomicResearch #EconomicsNews #NobelLaureates

Did women really compose Vedic hymns? The Rig Veda preserves some striking female voices — Lopamudra, Yami, Apala, Ghosha, Shachi and others. They speak of desire, rivalry, suffering, faith and ritual. But there is an important historical question: does a female voice inside a hymn prove that its composer was a woman? Many familiar lists of “female rishis” come from later traditional indexes such as the Anukramanis. And those classifications can include not only women, but goddesses, personified concepts such as Speech and Faith, and even figures such as Sarama, the divine female dog. #RigVeda #Vedas #VedicHistory #AncientIndia #IndianHistory #Hinduism #VedicLiterature #Sanskrit #Rishika #WomenInHistory #AncientHistory #IndianCulture #History #HistoryExplained #IndicHistory

South African jurist and human rights advocate Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has been awarded the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to promote peace and international law. Born in Durban in 1941 and raised under apartheid, Pillay built a remarkable legal career spanning South Africa and some of the world’s most important international institutions. She served at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, the International Criminal Court, and as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Her work at the Rwanda tribunal was particularly significant. The landmark Akayesu judgment established that rape and sexual violence can constitute acts of genocide when committed with genocidal intent—a major development in international criminal law. Peace requires justice. Justice requires the rule of law.
