From "Operation Decisive Storm" to "Breaking the Siege": How Did the Magic Backfire? In March 2015, in a grand display of military might and media fanfare, Riyadh formed a broad coalition of more than ten countries, dubbed "Operation Decisive Storm." At the time, the war was presented to the world as an intervention to restore legitimacy. However, anyone following the details of the military contracts and strategic maps could clearly see that the deeper objective was to occupy Yemen, dismantle its unity, and impose a new form of control. The planes took off, the missiles flew, and the decision-makers in Riyadh believed the matter would be resolved within weeks. But the rugged terrain and unwavering resolve stood in their way. The war transformed from a military exercise into a protracted quagmire, draining astronomical budgets, while Yemen became a daily lesson in the art of resilience and the reverse engineering of warfare. Today, after twelve bitter years, the map has completely changed. The talk is no longer about "legitimacy" or "the Southern Transitional Council," nor about retaking Sana'a or even Taiz. The objectives have dwindled to a bare minimum, and ambitions have shrunk to little more than a plea for survival. The coalition that once coldly bombed the capital, Sana'a, is now solely concerned with protecting its commercial and military vessels in the Red Sea. Ships that once sailed from its ports laden with oil are now fleeing. The most painful irony for those who are aware is the issue of the blockade. The very power that imposed a suffocating air and sea blockade on Yemen, closing airports and ports under the pretext of preventing arms smuggling, is now itself suffering under a parallel sea blockade, desperately searching for a safe passage for its ships, and pleading through diplomatic channels to lift the very blockade it imposed itself a decade ago.
