⚡️ There is a 70% chance that AI will destroy or catastrophically harm humanity ⚡️ In an interview with The New York Times, former OpenAI researcher Daniel Kokotajlo accused the company of ignoring the colossal risks associated with artificial general intelligence (AGI) because its executives are so captivated by its potential.

"OpenAI is very eager to create AGI," Kokotajlo said, "and they are recklessly striving to be the first."

The most striking claim Kokotajlo made to the newspaper was that the probability of AI destroying humanity is about 70% - a probability you wouldn't accept for any important life event, yet which OpenAI and similar companies continue to forge ahead with. The term "p(doom)," which in AI jargon means the probability that AI will lead to humanity's downfall, is a subject of ongoing debate in the machine learning community. The 31-year-old Kokotajlo told the NYT that after joining OpenAI in 2022 and being asked to forecast the technology's progress, he became convinced not only that the industry would achieve AGI by 2027, but also that there was a high likelihood that it would catastrophically harm or even destroy humanity. As noted in an open letter, Kokotajlo and his colleagues—including former and current employees of Google DeepMind and Anthropic, as well as Geoffrey Hinton, the so-called "godfather of AI," who left Google last year over similar concerns - defend their "right to warn" the public about the risks posed by AI. Kokotajlo was so convinced that AI poses a massive danger to humanity that he eventually personally persuaded OpenAI CEO Sam Altman that the company needed to "switch to safety" and devote more time to implementing safeguards to contain the technology, rather than continuing to make it smarter. According to the former employee, Altman seemed to agree with him at the time, but over time this appeared to be mere rhetoric. In April, Kokotajlo resigned from the company, informing his team in an email that he had "lost confidence that OpenAI will act responsibly" in its continued efforts to create near-human-level AI.

"The world is not ready, and we are not ready," he wrote in his letter, which was obtained by the NYT. "And I am concerned that we are rushing forward, regardless, and rationalizing our actions."
