One of the reasons that I'm sharing this video is because they hit on the advice that I think is essential and too often not given to people with homesteading dreams — Do not set yourself up for a super stressful beginning of your homesteading. Namely, your living environment. This couple talks briefly about how stressful their beginning living environment was. You might be able to get a sense that there's a lot they are leaving unsaid. My family has been in a similar situation and I have friends who have, as well. As this woman tells you, it's really hard on a marriage. Many marriages don't make it out of that hardship, sadly. Living in a decent place where everyone is warm, clean, and cooking for the family is reasonably easy is essential for harmony and happiness. Don't choose to burden yourself, your marriage, and your family living too rough. I know many people who would give this advice. Please take it 😉 https://youtu.be/UWvhQQ747qA?si=6k50ur-Ob6AORG7F

Thanks to chat member for this-- I just learnt about hugelkulture, a way to grow all summer without watering heaps. https://youtu.be/u8SWtuhL3so?si=p2Zmgn2UecK9mrbd This is one example. It’s a way to harness all the water we are getting right now and saving it for summer! I’m planning to do as many gardens as possible. My young stone fruit tree lived thru summer despite me not watering as I kept forgetting about it.

Rob Rundo is still in prison and has been for a year and a half with no pending charges and having had his case dismissed three times. How long can they keep doing this? Can they just hold him forever imprisoned in this state of pre-trial limbo without even being charged? This is why nobody cares about America anymore. It's become obvious even to people who aren't fully awake to (((them))) yet, that their are no rules. There's only those in the system's favor and those who are not. Homestead Lessons: How to Keep Chicks Well I recently posted about how to prevent and treat the chicken killer parasitic disease of Coccidiosis. Here are my homestead lessons of why we are now dealing with this after 10 years of raising baby chicks with no problems. Generally, when we have chicks, we raise them the first few weeks in a large box or bin. This has worked great for us and for many others. However, we've never raised this many chicks at once before and never a giant breed of chicken. We felt like we were running to catch up. We went from 2 bins to 3 bins, to 4 bins. We also couldn't figure out how to keep these particular chicks from spilling their water all over their enclosure. We changed waterers, elevated waterers, etc., etc. Ultimately, we just moved them into a large room of an outbuilding. (Why didn't we do that in the first place? We were afraid we wouldn't be able to make it rat proof — and rats and small skunks love to eat baby chicks.) When we moved them, that's when realized that they had Coccidiosis. We have been running behind them giving them Corid water (but yesterday realized that the Corid powder we were sold at our local feed store was expired. Does that matter? Perhaps. I got new. Maybe it hasn't been working to full effect. 😒) We have lost two chicks to this and we're praying that our treatment hasn't started too late. Lessons learned: 1. you can't necessarily merely scale up something that works for smaller or fewer animals 2. bins only work for no more than about 10 chicks of basic size 3. the larger the space you can give an animal, the better 4. uncomfortable, wet, or dirty housing for an animal is more than just a moral concern that animals deserve our care — death of the animal can result 😢

Much of homesteading is an outdoor affair. For our fair skinned family, that means sun protection. Some sun, necessary. Do not discount your need for sunshine in producing the mood uplifting and mood stabilizing serotonin. Too much sun, harmful. But we avoid all sunscreen which has oxybenzone in it — among other nasty consequences of using oxybenzone is endocrine disruption for men, women, and children. Our preferred method of sun protection is simply shielding ourselves from direct sun. We wear BIG hats. We also wear UPF clothing — clothing treated with sun protection. A company which provides both extra large hats and sunscreen infused clothing is Coolibar. There are others https://www.coolibar.com/women-s-shapeable-poolside-hat-upf-50.html In the past, we used a natural sunscreen made from fractionated (liquid) coconut oil + carrot seed oil + lavender (to mask the earthy smell of the carrot seed , which my children disliked). I read that carrot seed oil has "no proven spf". I'll say that my family of red heads used it in Floridian 365 days of sunshine and didn't get sunburned. A Note on Vitamin D: —Vitamin D deficiency is a thing and it's serious. I had a fairskinned relative who lived in a dreary place and was found to be VitD Deficient, despite playing outside everyday and being on a soccer team. It was chocked up to the cloudy nature of her environment. Keep this in mind. Also keep in mind that Europeans don't need much direct sunshine to produce the VitD our bodies need. Here's the link to a brief article that gives some guidelines on how much is enough — https://www.ahealthiermichigan.org/2022/01/28/how-much-sunlight-do-i-need-to-get-vitamin-d/ copy paste about oxybenzone: "Oxybenzone has been found in the world’s waters, and may contributeTrusted Source to coral reef bleaching and coral death. It’s also absorbed through the skin, and has been found in amniotic fluid, blood plasma, urine, and human breast milk. Oxybenzone is also an endocrine disruptor, which may adversely affect the hormonal systems of men, women, and children. In addition, it’s been linked to low birth weight, allergies, and cell damage." Happy Homesteading!

Blackerry Jam - 1 lb. of blackberries - 1/4 bottle lemon juice (about 1/8 of a cup) - 1.5 cups of sugar - 1 tsp. pectin (optional if using) pair with 1 tbsp. of sugar In a saucepan, combine the berries with the sugar. Heat the mixture over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, for approximately 15 minutes. Once the berries have cooked down, use a potato masher to gently smash them. Bring the mixture to a full boil, then add lemon juice. Allow the mixture to simmer for another 15-20 minutes, ensuring it thickens properly. If desired, add pectin for the last minute of cooking to help the jam set. Be careful not to overcook the pectin. Ladle the hot jam into clean, sterilized jars, leaving about 1/4 inch of space at the top. Secure the lids tightly on the jars and place them in a water bath. Process in water bath for 10 minutes. Carefully remove the jars from the water bath and place them on a towel-lined countertop. Let them cool undisturbed for at least 12 hours. @BearToothBayou

For the canners in here, I tried canning black beans three different ways this week. First, I tried sprouting them before canning. I read this method has the highest nutritional value. But every time I tried to sprout them they got moldy. This one was a flop for me. I'm open to suggestions if anyone has any. Second, I did the traditional method. Soak overnight, simmer for 30 min, hot pack, and pressure can. These beans started getting mushy and disintegrated a bit, but still good. Third, I canned dry beans. Rinsed them, measured them into jars, covered with water, and pressure canned. These beans were cooked well enough during processing and maintained some of their shape and texture a bit better. Thought I'd share in case anyone else is interested!

Not just the showroom version of a tiny house, but everyday life in a tiny house. Not just the romantic idea of "homesteading" or off grid life, but the everyday details of this lifestyle. We split wood for heat, fill the water tank from a gravity fed spring, and attempt to grow as much of our own food as possible between the weather and wildlife here. I hope to help others learn from mistakes and make life just a little easier for anyone else interested in pursuing a similar lifestyle.  We live in a somewhat harsh and cold climate, but enjoy the stunning scenery and wildlife that we are surrounded by on a daily basis. Sam Melia Banned From Access to His Children

Two weeks ago political prisoner, Sam Melia, was moved from HMP Leeds to HMP Hull. After a week of settling in to his new prison and beginning to get into a new routine, Sam received the shocking news that he would no longer be allowed contact with his children. HMP Hull, working alongside the national Probation Service, have made the decision to classify Sam as a PPRC – Person Posing Risk to Children. This news made no sense as Sam is in prison for a public order offence relating to putting stickers bearing political slogans on lampposts, not a crime involving children in any way.

Although the permaculture literature is full of glowing reports about comfrey, little practical advice is given for using the wonder plant.
