•being traced back to ancient Greece
•structuralism and functionalism (as two dominated theoretical perspectives)
•focusing on breaking down mental processes into basic components
•relying on trained introspection
•(focusing on) the functions or purpose of the brain
•the underlying cause of behavior and the mental processes (the causes and consequences of behavior)
•influencing contemporary psychology
Sample Answer:
Although the scientific study of the mind and behavior can perceive psychology as a multifaceted discipline because of including many sub-fields of study, being traced back to ancient Greece could associate structuralism and functionalism with focusing on breaking down mental processes into basic components; moreover, relying on trained introspection may derive the functions or purpose of the brain from the causes and consequences of behavior as well as influencing contemporary psychology. (71 words)
other points:
•separating psychology from philosophy
•analyzing the workings of the mind in a more structured way

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior, according to the American Psychological Association. Psychology is a multifaceted discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes.
Psychology is really a very new science, with most advances happening over the past 150 years or so. However, its origins can be traced back to ancient Greece, 400 – 500 years BC. Philosophers used to discuss many topics now studied by modern psychology, such as memory, free will vs determinism, nature vs. nurture, attraction etc.
In the early days of psychology there were two dominant theoretical perspectives regarding how the brain worked, structuralism and functionalism. Structuralism was the name given to the approach pioneered by Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920), which focused on breaking down mental processes into the most basic components. The term originated from Edward Titchener, an American psychologist who had been trained by Wundt. Wundt was important because he separated psychology from philosophy by analyzing the workings of the mind in a more structured way, with the emphasis being on objective measurement and control. Structuralism relied on trained introspection, a research method whereby subjects related what was going on in their minds while performing a certain task.
An American psychologist named William James (1842-1910) developed an approach which came to be known as functionalism, that disagreed with the focus of Structuralism. James argued that the mind is constantly changing and it is pointless to look for the structure of conscious experience. Rather, he proposed the focus should be on how and why an organism does something, i.e. the functions or purpose of the brain. James suggested that psychologists should look for the underlying cause of behavior and the mental processes involved. This emphasis on the causes and consequences of behavior has influenced contemporary psychology.

Exercise 4:
To better understand selfies and how people form their identities online, the researchers combed through 2.5 million selfie posts ....1.... (of / in / above / on) Instagram to determine what kinds of identity statements people make by taking and sharing the photos. Nearly 52 percent of all selfies ....2.... (fall / fallen / fell / falls) into the appearance category: pictures of people showing off their make-up, clothes, lips, etc. Pics about looks were two times more popular than the other 14 categories ....3.... (constrained / confined / combined / unconfined). ....4.... (Regarding / Unless / After / Against) appearances, social selfies with friends, loved ones, and pets were the most common (14 percent). Then ....5.... (let / were / came / come) ethnicity pics (13 percent), travel (7 percent), and health and fitness (5 percent). The researchers noted that the prevalence of ethnicity selfies (selfies about a person’s ethnicity, nationality or country of origin) is an indication that people are proud of their backgrounds. They also found that most selfies are solo pictures, ....6.... (less than / other from / rather than / most of) taken with a group. ....7.... (Along with / Although / Overall / Moreover), an overwhelming 57 percent of selfies on Instagram were posted by the 18-35-year-old crowd, something the researchers say isn't too surprising ....8.... (consider / considered / considering / to consider) the demographics of the social media platform. The under-18 age group posted about 30 percent of selfies.

Exercise 3:
From the earliest civilisations, plants and animals have been portrayed as a means of understanding and recording the potential uses, such as their economic and healing properties. From the first illustrated ....1.... (catalogue / calculation / formation / figuration) of medicinal plants, De Materia Medica by Dioscorides, in the first century through to the late fourteenth century the illustration of plants and animals changed very little. Woodcuts in instructional manuals and herbals were often repeatedly copied over the centuries, resulting in a loss of definition and accuracy so that they became little more than stylized decoration. With the growing ....2.... (popularity / popular / singularity / resilience) of copperplate engravings, the traditional use of woodcuts declined and the representation of plants and animals became more accurate. Then, with the ....3.... (emergence / descent / havoc / omniscience) of artists such as Albrecht Durer and Leonardo Da Vinci, naturalists such as Otto Brunfels, Leonhard Fuchs in botany and Conrad Gesner and Ulisse Aldrovandi in zoology, nature began to be depicted in a more realistic style. Individual living plants or animals ....4.... (observed / observe / had observed / were observed) directly and their likeness rendered onto paper or vellum.
