By• @chartrdaily Sandwich artists: Sandwich specialist Subway is exploring a sale, eyeing a deal that the Wall Street Journal reports could value the chain north of $10bn.
The news comes at a time when Subway’s business is looking fresh, having reportedly posted record sales in 2021 and 2022, after roughly a decade of stagnation.
Subway started life in 1965 as Pete’s Super Submarines in Connecticut, co-founded by then 17-year-old Fred DeLuca and family friend Peter Buck, who loaned DeLuca $1,000 to start the business to try and pay college tuition. Running each store themselves, the pair successfully opened 16 shops in less than a decade, but things were taken to the next level when they began franchising in 1974.
Sub counts
Since then, Subway has managed the brand carefully, positioning the chain as a healthier alternative. That branding, combined with a lean franchise model, propelled Subway towards the top of the franchise food chain — meaning that any potential acquirer will get a company with more than 21,000 sites in America (per QSR), 30% more than second-place Starbucks.
Indeed, setting up a Subway franchise reportedly costs somewhere between $100k-250k, a fraction of what’s needed to set up a McDonald’s equivalent where costs can exceed $2 million.
However, although each store requires a lower upfront cost, they also sell less. A typical Subway pulls in a relatively-meager ~$440k of sales-per-store, the second-lowest in the QSR 50. Low costs also mean that Subway stores pop-up constantly, which means franchisees can find themselves “eating from opposite ends of the same sandwich”, hurting sales for both.

Methodology: this graph represents the highest grossing animated movies of all time. The total gross amount was sourced from the-numbers.com and accounts for worldwide box office gross which includes domestic and international box office (obviously).
While Disney | Pixar take up the rest of the films, Illumination Studios accounts for 33% of the highest grossing films.
Fun Fact: The Lion King is the only film on this list from the 20th century (1994).
Like this graph? So do I, perhaps share it with a friend or post it on your story. A bit shy?? Feel free to reach out to me if you want to talk about data, ideas, or life in general. (DO NOT try to sell me things)

By @postclimate Scientists said the ozone’s recovery should serve as proof that societies can join to solve environmental problems and combat climate change.
A new assessment of Earth’s depleted ozone layer released Monday shows that efforts to repair the vital atmospheric shield are working, according to a panel of U.N.-backed scientists, as global emissions of ozone-harming chemicals continue to decline.
As a result, the ozone layer — which blocks ultraviolet sunlight from reaching Earth’s surface — continues to slowly thicken.
Restoring it is key for human health, food security and the planet. UV-B radiation causes cancer and eye damage in humans. It also damages plants, inhibiting their growth and curbing their ability to store planet-warming carbon dioxide.
At this rate, the ozone layer could recover to 1980s levels across most of the globe by the 2040s, and by 2066 in Antarctica, the report concludes.

By • @_the_grapher__ The theorem is proven. But there is a bound to curvature to be satisfied before the theorem can hold.
Some unresolved issues:
(1) Formalise the definition (construction) of the parallel curve in the case of concave curves. Thereafter, consider whether this theorem is true under this definition, where the closed smooth curve is formed by convex and concave curves linked alternatively.
(2) Reaffirm the upper bond of r proposed, i.e. r=ρ, where ρ is the radius of the curvature, to avoid self-intersection.
(3) What is the least identity of the curves in order for this theorem to be true? This is similar to the first part of question (1).
(4) Can this proof be more generalised? For example, what if this theorem is extended into higher dimensions? (Is there any analogy in higher dimensions?)

By @statista Taiwan is extending its mandatory military service in 2024 from 4 months to one year as tensions continue to rise with China. Conscripts will also receive a higher monthly stipend, increasing from NT$6,500 (US$211) to NT$26,307 (US$856), roughly akin to minimum wage.
Fewer than 30 countries worldwide still require whole age cohorts to complete military service. But among those that do, four months is a relatively short period. As our chart shows, North Korea stands at the other end of the spectrum in terms of duration, although media reports vary. The Guardian reported 10 years for men and 7 for women as of 2015, while the Indian Express puts the figures closer to 8 years for men and 5 for women. According to media reports, those in the elite class are usually able to avoid conscription.
Israel too has a fairly long and rigorous conscription, albeit far shorter than North Korea. According to the IDF, most Israeli men over 18 who are Jewish, Druze or Circassian must serve in the Israel Defense Forces for 32 months and women for 24 months. Meanwhile, in Egypt, conscription is compulsory for men aged between 18 and 30 for up to 36 months.
South Korea, which is technically still at war with North Korea, also has mandatory conscription for all able-bodied men for a period of 18 months to 21 months, depending on the posting. Some athletes and classical artists are allowed to postpone or forgo the draft entirely. The K-Pop group BTS brought the issue to light recently, with debate over whether they could be excused from service. The decision was made that men can delay their military draft until the age of 28 and those working in the entertainment industry are now allowed to postpone their service until they turn 30. The oldest member of BTS, Jin, has now started his mandatory draft.
While most countries with conscription only draft men, a handful of countries including North Korea, Israel, Norway, Sweden, Eritrea and Mozambique conscript women too.
