i686 is not good for performing CTF challenge buffer overflow because it has a stack canary. A stack canary is a security feature that can help to prevent buffer overflow attacks. When a stack canary is enabled, the stack will contain a random value that is checked before each function call. If the value is changed, then it is likely that a buffer overflow has occurred. Buffer overflow attacks work by overwriting the return address on the stack with the address of a malicious function. When the function returns, it will execute the malicious code instead of the intended code. However, if there is a stack canary, then the malicious code will not be able to overwrite the return address because the canary will be changed. Therefore, i686 is not good for performing CTF challenge buffer overflow because it has a stack canary. However, there are other platforms that do not have stack canaries, such as x86_64. If you are looking to perform CTF challenge buffer overflow, then you should use a platform that does not have a stack canary. Here are some other platforms that do not have stack canaries: * ARM * MIPS * PowerPC These platforms are often used in CTF challenges because they are more vulnerable to buffer overflow attacks. However, it is important to note that there are other security features that can help to prevent buffer overflow attacks, such as address space layout randomization (ASLR).
