23 Beginning as a poet of fantasy and legends. Then he became a poet of realism for he was writing about contemporary events and problems of his society. From 1900, his poetry grew more realistic. He had become the major playwright for the Irish Literary Theatre in 1897. It was the Irish movement for Independence that made Yeats into a poet facing the reality of contemporary life. This shifting from fantasy to reality in his poetry made him leave the romantic ideals behind and face reality. So it was his aim "to write for my own race and for the reality".

24 W. B. Yeats
Yeats was an Irish poet and dramatist. He was one of the foremost figures of 20th century literature. He was born in Ireland in 1865 and died in 1939. His father practiced law and was a successful portrait painter. He was educated in Dublin and London. He was an art student for three years, but he left art for literature. He studied poetry from an early age and became fascinated by the Irish legends. His poetry was influenced by John Keats, WilliamWordsworth and William Blake.
