Repost from ASHCHARYA BANSAL
I have given interviews of ESE ,IISc along with ONGC , IOCL , BPCL (college and gate) , EIL ,BARC , ISRO (college and written) and have been selected in all except my first one ;)
So lets start with a failure
First interview : Isro where I panicked in the beginning and needless to say the result . I had prepared for interview by memorizing the introductions and favorite topic and project.
Then what went wrong ?? I could not deliver properly and my confidence got a hit and I panicked.
Lesson learnt : Be calm , composed and when a question is thrown at you ,never reply instantly . Think for some 4–5 seconds (the wait time should not become uneasy ) ,frame an answer start or think of concepts to be told and then start the answer . If you don't know , then also this thing shows that you tried to give attempt . If no answer comes in your mind , you can say sorry sir , I don't know about this but will learn about it (In future learn it as it will help you in other interviews ). This helped me as my answers were more organized and framed as compared to instant answers.
Then never bluff much or if want to say something that you are not confident , " sorry sir , I don't know the exact answer but I can guess if you allow ." If yes tell the explanation and its reasoning.
Then comes the part , " Be Yourself " or try to " Be Ideal " . So what makes you ideal for the Company ?? A company wants a dedicated but practical and thinking person . So whatever you say , there should be layers or at least one layer of reasoning to it .
Timeline of a Interview
• Introduction : You start with a series of points to start the discussion and make yourself comfortable. A brief intro covers cllg , birthplace, degree branch , college city , family .These will pose some questions . You have to think what can be asked from these keywords and if possible google them like meaning of your name .
• Prepare Company specific points.
The important subject for that company like Oil psus - chairman , its revenue , some award , welfare schmes , technical working and the subjects knowledge important for them are to be covered specifically like fluid machinery , ic engines .
Why do you want to join a company ?
What will you offer to company or Why should we hire you ?
Some recent news of the company and dont forget to watch the company video on YouTube and its website which itself will give you answers for above questions.
• Also learn the Important Subjects and their application and how it is useful in daily life . Technical subjects ( first priority to be given to subjects which are important for their applications , and then all basic laws and definitions of all subjects ) .
If the interviewer asks you 2–3 questions from the subject you are uncomfortable ,you can tell " Sorry sir , I have not prepared this subject well . But I have prepared these ….subjects well . " Because instead of wasting time of your interview for questions you dont know , you should use the time for questions you know . Example - An interview with - 10 question ( unanswered or wrong) with 15 questions answered well does not seem appealing compared with an interview with 4 questions ( unanswered including an apology) and 18 questions answered .
• Theory of your Projects / Training , problems faced and how you overcame them by using your strengths and their application in Present or future .
Always remember , the interviewer mostly comes empty and as you give answers he through reasoning digs out new questions which becomes difficult for us . So you should know what you know well and then after thinking give answers ( layers of reasoning ) . That's why mock interviews are important as you may always look from a same angle but others may help you in looking other important points.
• Write some Strengths to tell and incidents to support them . Also prepare for weakness ( makes you human :D ) and tell a strategy like how you are tackling it .
• Make some hobbies to tell or prepare some layers of questions to tell about hobbies and why these hobbies help you.

💡 What is a Mutual Fund?
A mutual fund is a pool of money collected from many investors, which is managed by a professional fund manager.
Instead of you picking stocks or bonds, the fund does it for you.
👉 Example:
You invest ₹5,000 → it gets combined with others → invested in shares, bonds, etc.
⸻
📊 Types of Mutual Funds
1. Equity Funds (High Risk, High Return)
• Invest in stocks
• Best for long-term wealth creation (5+ years)
• Example: Large cap, mid cap, small cap
2. Debt Funds (Low Risk, Stable Return)
• Invest in bonds, government securities
• Good for short-term goals or parking money
3. Hybrid Funds (Balanced)
• Mix of equity + debt
• Medium risk
⸻
⏳ Ways to Invest
🔹 SIP (Systematic Investment Plan)
• Invest small amounts regularly (monthly)
• Builds discipline + benefits from market ups & downs
🔹 Lumpsum
• Invest a large amount at once
• Works well when markets are low (if timed correctly)
⸻
📈 Key Concepts You MUST Know
1. NAV (Net Asset Value)
• Price per unit of a mutual fund
2. Compounding
• Your returns generate further returns over time
👉 This is where real wealth is created
⸻
🎯 Benefits of Mutual Funds
✔ Professional management
✔ Diversification (reduces risk)
✔ Start with as low as ₹500
✔ Suitable for all goals (short-term & long-term)
⸻
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Investing based on “tips” or hype
❌ Checking portfolio daily and panicking
❌ Stopping SIP in market crash (big mistake)
❌ Choosing funds only based on past returns
⸻
🧠 Pro Insight (Real Talk)
Most people fail not because of wrong funds…
They fail because of wrong behavior.
👉 Panic selling
👉 Greed in bull market
👉 No long-term vision

Many students frequently ask:
“Sir, I couldn’t clear GATE. Is pursuing M.Tech still possible?”
Let me address this clearly —
Yes, it is possible. However, it requires a more strategic approach.
A common misconception is:
No GATE = No M.Tech = Career setback ❌
In reality, GATE is just one pathway, not the only one.
⸻
Alternative Pathways for M.Tech:
• IIIT Hyderabad – Conducts its own PGEE examination
• IIIT Delhi – Offers admissions through alternative criteria
• IIT Gandhinagar – Provides non-GATE admission routes in select programs
• ISI Kolkata – Ideal for those inclined towards Data Science and AI
• BITS Pilani – Higher degree programs without mandatory GATE
• Private Universities (VIT, SRM, etc.) – Relatively easier admission processes
• International Universities – Admission based on CGPA, IELTS, and overall profile
⸻
Important Consideration:
Choosing not to pursue GATE also means foregoing certain advantages:
• Easier access to IITs/NITs
• Monthly stipend during M.Tech
• Opportunities in Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)
Therefore, do not avoid GATE solely because it is challenging.
Opt out only if you have a well-defined alternative plan.
⸻
A Practical Perspective:
Do not pursue M.Tech merely for the degree or brand value.
Instead, ask yourself:
“What is my end goal?”
It is important to recognize that:
• Graduates from premier institutes may still face challenges
• Individuals from tier-2 colleges often achieve significant success
The differentiating factors are skills, clarity, and consistency.
⸻
Final Thought:
Your career is not determined by a single examination, but by the decisions you make thereafter.
