What is Russia Ukraine War costing UK?
A sizable crowd gathered in London recently to voice opposition to the UK's intention to supply arms to Ukraine. Several people came together at the rally, organized by the Stop the War Coalition and other anti-war organizations, to demand an end to the UK's involvement in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.
The rally takes place while tensions between Russia and Ukraine are growing and there have been indications of increased conflict in Ukraine's eastern areas. Several people have criticized the UK government's decision to transfer weapons to Ukraine, with some claiming that doing so will simply escalate the situation and result in more violence and bloodshed.
The protesters in London demanded an end to the UK's involvement in the crisis, stating that the nation ought to be working for peace instead of escalating the conflict with military force. Numerous others said that the UK's choice to transfer weapons to Ukraine just serves to escalate the crisis and that Ukraine's citizens are suffering the most due to the ongoing conflict.
Representatives from a variety of groups and organizations joined forces during the protest to demand a stop to the shipment of weapons to Ukraine. Speeches, songs, and chants were used to mark the event. They were all intended to increase awareness of the problem and put pressure on the UK government to modify its position.
One of the reasons why the people in the UK want to put an end to this war is the rising inflation which triggered a massive shock to the economy, especially to energy and food markets, squeezing supply and pushing up prices to unprecedented levels. Compared to the other economic regions the euro area has been particularly vulnerable to the economic consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The war added heavily to the inflationary pressures on consumer prices, especially for energy and food. Prices for food products such as wheat (as an ingredient of flour, bread, and pasta) or oilseeds, for which imports from Ukraine and Russia had played an important role before the war, recorded inflation rates far above average food inflation.
In January 2023 the UK inflation stood at 10.1% and the below chart shows the biggest contributors to the inflation. Basics such as milk, olive oil, cheese, and eggs saw the largest increases but costs for sugar, jam, honey, syrups, chocolate, and soft drinks and juices also jumped.
Ultimately, the demonstration in London delivers a strong message about the need for peace and diplomacy in resolving the ongoing conflict in Ukraine to the UK government and the larger international community.
