A journalist drank only beer for 46 days and lost weight—he was following a centuries-old tradition of Bavarian monks.
— In the 17th century, monks of the Paulaner Order observed a strict fast: for 40 days, they were not allowed to eat solid food, so they brewed a very strong beer—Doppelbock;
— The drink was rich in nutrients, so the fast was not broken. It is called Paulaner Salvator and is still sold worldwide today (it is precisely because of this beer that beer was nicknamed “liquid bread”);
— In 2011, journalist Jay Wilson replicated the monks’ fast and survived on beer alone for 46 days, losing 11 kg in the process. He noted that during the fast, he experienced incredible mental clarity and focus.
Important note: Doppelbock is closer in composition to a thick, nutritious soup than to modern beer, so if you’re going to try this stunt, it should only be with it.

Italy has become the first country where it is officially possible to take paid leave to care for a pet—a precedent established through the courts. A librarian in Rome stayed home with her dying dog, was denied paid leave, but challenged the decision and won the case. The court cited Article 727 of the Criminal Code, under which leaving an animal in critical condition is considered a violation, meaning the owner was obligated to stay with her pet. Now, with a veterinarian’s note, Italians can officially take several days of leave to care for their animals.
