JACKSON HOLE DECODED: What Warsh told the world in 30 minutes
Speech title: "In Our Time"
His 100th day as Fed Chair. And he chose to draw lines.
Here's exactly what he said — line by line:
🔥 ON INFLATION:
→ "The responsibility for 65 months of sustained, elevated inflation sits squarely with the central bank."
→ "The Fed's price-stability objective of 2%, as measured by PCE, is a firm, fixed target."
→ "This summer's readings were better than expected — but they do not tell me that underlying trends have meaningfully improved."
→ "Progress over the past two years has been modest."
→ Core PCE still running 3.7% YoY | 4.1% over 6 months — against a 2% target.
🔑 THE KEY LINE:
→ "We must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed. Otherwise, we have work to do. That's our job, our mandate, and our charge to keep."
Translation? If inflation doesn't come down fast enough — they hike.
💬 ON RATE HIKES:
→ "Short-term interest rates are the predominant tool to achieve the dual mandate."
→ "On balance, I would be hard pressed to describe broad financial conditions as restrictive."
Read that again. He's saying policy isn't even tight enough yet.
→ "Market prices show confidence that we will deliver price stability. And I can assure you, they're right."
That's not a promise to hold. That's a promise to act.
This is the clearest Warsh has been since taking office.
