Why cannot people breathe and swallow at the same time?
The human vocal apparatus allows humans to speak. At the same time, its intricate structure does not enable humans, unlike animals, to breathe and swallow simultaneously.
Although newborn babies can do this, they lose this ability at approximately 9 months of age. Once we reach this age, our vocal apparatus sinks lower, so that we are capable of producing a wide range of distinct sounds that form speech.
After this point, though, we can no longer breathe and swallow at the same time.
