On the 26th of February, 2026, our senior students had the absolute pleasure of hosting an Intro/Welcoming Day for our junior social work students! The day was all about connection, inspiration, and laying the foundation for the years ahead. We talked about what "Social Work" truly means to us beyond the textbook definition: the passion, the advocacy, and the heart behind the profession. Our amazing club team leads took the floor to introduce the different teams within our club. Whether you're into community outreach, mental health awareness, gender issues, documentation, or research, there’s a place for you here! To our juniors: Welcome to the family! We are so excited to see the change you will bring.

https://www.theaisocialworker.com/services Integrating AI into social work practice is no longer optional—it is mandatory. Accordingly, all social workers need to develop AI-related skills to effectively integrate these tools into their practice. We are pleased to share the website of a company that provides AI training specifically designed for social workers. We thank Leul, our former graduate, and the staff of ECDD for bringing this valuable resource to our attention.

The School of Social Work at AAU successfully conducted its Alumni Homecoming Day as part of Addis Ababa University’s 75th Anniversary celebrations. The school prepared banners and brochure for the occasion and displayed a number of publications produced by its academic staff. These materials highlighted the school’s academic contributions and ongoing engagement in research, teaching, and community service. Current students played a major role in handling and organizing the event, contributing significantly to its smooth and successful execution. The school also extends its sincere appreciation to the current head, Dr. Firehiwot, for her generous financial support, which greatly contributed to the success of the event. The event created a welcoming environment for alumni to reconnect with the school and with one another.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Eyader Moges, a graduating student in our undergraduate program. Eyader was one of our outstanding students, known for the positive energy and good spirit he consistently brought to the classroom. Eyader had been receiving treatment at Black Lion Hospital following brain tumor surgery and remained in close communication with the Undergraduate Program Coordinator with the hope of reintegrating into the academic system. Sadly, his illness relapsed suddenly, and he passed away last night. His body has been transported to Arsi, his hometown, for burial. Following the news of his passing, the Undergraduate Program Coordinator and several fourth-year students visited Eyader’s family at Black Lion Hospital to offer their support and condolences. The School of Social Work extends its heartfelt condolences to Eyader’s family, his classmates, teachers, and the entire Addis Ababa University community, as well as the broader social work community. We mourn the loss of a promising young professional whose memory will remain with us.

Gladly, W/ro Mulu Haile, a 1970 social work graduate and founding director of the Mission for Community Development Program (MCDP), shared her rich experience in Ethiopia’s welfare system and practice with our 3rd-year students. The School of Social Work would like to express its sincere appreciation to W/ro Mulu Haile for graciously presenting herself and sharing her vast experience with her junior social workers. W/ro Mulu, the book we presented to you is far less than what you truly deserve for your outstanding contribution to the field of social work. We would also like to extend our gratitude to Dr. Abiot for inviting W/ro Mulu to share her experience with the students.

The Chinese often say that if you want to know the destination of your journey, ask someone who has already been there or is returning from it. Following this wisdom, the School of Social Work invited Selamawit Gebremesekel, a recent graduate of the School and current staff member at the international organization Plan International, to share her experience with newly admitted social work students. During her talk, Selamawit offered valuable advice on how to succeed both academically and through extracurricular engagement. She also shared insights from her own journey toward professional success. The School of Social Work extends its heartfelt appreciation to Selamawit Gebremesekel, who graduated just two years ago and has already established herself at the reputable Plan International. We especially thank her for generously sharing her time and experience with the newly admitted students—for the second time in three years.
