MOLINA, ROWLAND AND CRUTZEN WON THE NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY FOR THEIR WORK ON THE EFFECTS OF CFCs ON THE OZONE LAYER🏆
In 1970, Paul Crutzen's research showed that nitrogen oxide emissions from humans, such as from the burning of fossil fuels and biomass, react with ozone in the atmosphere, creating a chain reaction that depletes the ozone layer and causes the formation of other chemicals like nitric acid and nitrous oxide.
In 1974, Molina and Rowland's landmark paper linked this process to CFCs, showing that CFCs are carried into the stratosphere, where the sun's ultraviolet radiation breaks them down and releases chlorine atoms.
The work of these three scientists led to the discovery of the “ozone hole” over the Arctic, which resulted in international changes in legislation limiting the use of CFCs in commercial products.
