AAU is Ethiopia’s oldest national university, established in 1950 as the University College of Addis Ababa.
📜 A Brief History
In 1961, it became Haile Selassie I University, with the former Guenete Leul Palace serving as the center of administration. Following the 1974 Ethiopian Revolution, it was briefly renamed the University of Ethiopia (National University) and later took its current name, Addis Ababa University, in 1975.
AAU opened its first Master’s programs in 1979 and its first PhD programs in 1987, followed by major expansion across academic fields.

Today, AAU continues to contribute to Ethiopia’s development through teaching, research, innovation, and community service. The university is also implementing its 2024–2028 Strategic Plan, with a focus on academic excellence, effective governance, research, and institutional development.
