| 3 | The Crown of Love
John Everett Millais, 1875
The Crown of Love is a vivid portrayal of the tension between romantic love and control. The painting shows a man lifting a woman in a dramatic embrace, but rather than conveying a tender moment, the woman’s body language suggests reluctance, even resistance. Her face shows sorrow and her body leans back, implying that she is emotionally withdrawing from the situation, while the man clutches her closely, as if trying to prevent her from slipping away.
The title "The Crown of Love" hints at an idealized view of love, but the scene itself reveals a more complex reality. Love, in this case, seems to be a heavy burden, with the man’s desperate hold and the woman’s passive response indicating an unbalanced dynamic. The rocky cliff in the background intensifies the drama, symbolizing the stormy emotions between the two.
Millais, a key figure in the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, often dealt with themes of deep emotion and moral complexity in his work. In "The Crown of Love", he masterfully captures the duality of love—where affection can become possessive, and where beauty is intertwined with sorrow. | 217 |
