Howick parents seek help for daughter living with rare genetic conditions Tyler's journey has included countless scans, blood tests, and surgeries. Her parents said they have always taken each hurdle in their stride, guided by faith and the belief that their daughter is "fearfully and wonderfully made". Believed to be the only known case in South Africa — and possibly the world — a Howick couple is pleading for help to save their 13-year-old daughter, who was born with two extremely rare genetic disorders and urgently needs medical treatment to support her growth and development. Born a month premature in January 2012, Tyler Moran was diagnosed with Disorders of Sex Development (DSD), a group of congenital conditions that affect how a person’s sex reproductive organs develop before birth. Later testing confirmed she also has Turner and Jacob’s syndromes, both of which are extremely rare. Her parents, Hayley and Kevin Moran, said Tyler’s case was believed to be the first of its kind in South Africa, and possibly in the world. A fluorescence in situ hybridisation (Fish) chromosome test done last year revealed she has three different sets of chromosomes. “Of the two syndromes, Turner’s has more complications as it affects the major organs, hearing and fertility,” said Hayley. Jacob’s syndrome is a rare genetic abnormality in which a male receives an extra Y chromosome from his father. Tyler’s journey has included countless scans, blood tests, and surgeries. Her parents said they have always taken each hurdle in their stride, guided by faith and the belief that their daughter is “fearfully and wonderfully made”. With puberty now delayed, Tyler urgently needs oestrogen to start hormone therapy and daily diabetic injections, along with regular organ screening and hearing tests. In March 2026, she is due to return to theatre for a follow-up procedure that will guide doctors in planning a major reconstructive operation. “We feel huge pressure to keep her on her medication, as the window to introduce puberty is now and she’s already behind her peers,” Hayley said. “We tried to keep our medical aid going, even sold cars to cover it, but eventually lost it.
