#MAURITANIA: Nearly 90 migrants bound for Europe perished when their boat capsized earlier this week off the coast of Mauritania, the state news agency and a local official said Thursday, while dozens more remain missing. "The Mauritanian coast guard recovered the bodies of 89 people aboard a large traditional fishing boat that capsized on Monday July 1 on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean" about four kilometres from the country's southwest city of Ndiago, the state news agency said.

#KENYA: The government of Kenya has shared its commitment to protect refugees and asylum seekers together with host communities. This is in response to an insecurity event that occurred between two refugee communities in Kakuma Refugee Camp on June 20, 2024, that forced 762 households comprising 3,054 individuals to shift to Ruiru-Sub-County through normal and hired public transport. “The DRS and sub-county security teams swiftly moved in to restore calm. Subsequently, together with UNHCR and other partners, we held peace restoration meetings with the affected refugee communities, culminating in a peace agreement that allows for the reintegration of refugees back into the camp.” Read the statement.

#KENYA: The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists, and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has announced plans to march to the Ministry of Health's headquarters in Nairobi on Monday, July 8, 2024, until all medical interns are assigned to health facilities across the country in accordance with the 2017 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The CBA went into effect in May, following a 56-day statewide doctors' strike, as part of a return-to-work formula (RTWF) signed by the union and the government.

#KENYA: Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria has announced the suspension of further employment of civil servants. This follows after austerity measures were preconized by President William Ruto after he declined to sign the Finance Bill 2024. Other than the austerity measures, the announcement is in compliance with the Public Finance Management Act 2012 which provides that Kenya’s public Wage bill should not exceed 35 per cent of the national budget. CS Kuria has now directed the Public Service Commission to halt new and ongoing recruitment, including ongoing interviews for shortlisted candidates in public service. He also reiterated that any future hiring in the public sector will be justified by genuine operational needs.

#ISRAEL: Five people were killed on Friday in an Israeli military operation in Jenin in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Authority health ministry said. At least 12 Palestinians have now been killed in Israeli raids this week in the territory where tensions have intensified since the start of the Gaza war in October.
