In neighbouring Bangladesh and Nepal, young people fed up with out-of-touch elites took to the streets and toppled unpopular governments. Those demonstrations were marked by violence, which Dipke says his group eschews. Modi’s BJP has strengthened its position recently, securing a landmark election victory in the eastern state of West Bengal that expanded its reach beyond its traditional strongholds in northern and western India. The BJP and its allies now hold power in two-thirds of India’s states. However, there are emerging signs of political churn driven by Gen Z voters. In the southern state of Tamil Nadu, young voters helped propel a 51-year-old movie star to a shock electoral victory in May, defeating parties that had dominated the state’s politics for decades. There’s a generational gap with the political class that’s feeding resentment among some young Indians, who feel the government is neither creating enough opportunities for them nor adequately representing their concerns. While nearly 65 per cent of India’s population is under the age of 35, many of the country’s most powerful political leaders are in their 60s and 70s. Modi is 75. The “cockroach” movement has been endorsed by some of Modi’s rivals.  The BJP initially dismissed the frenzy as an online gimmick and a “premeditated conspiracy” by its political opponents. It hasn’t commented recently, including on Dipke’s trip and protest.

What started out as a social media joke among Gen Z is turning into an irritant for the political establishment in India, as the "Cockroach Janta Party" draws support from young people frustrated by a lack of jobs and a string of controversies in the education system. Less than a month after being formed, the mock political party had already amassed more than 22 million followers on Instagram - more than twice that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party. The CJP’s founder, Boston University graduate Abhijeet Dipke, returned to India from the US on Saturday (Jun 6) and led a youth protest in New Delhicalling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.  His visit will provide an early test of whether the party’s online popularity can be translated into political support on the ground in a country with one of the world’s youngest populations. WHAT IS THE "COCKROACH" MOVEMENT? The satirical movement emerged on May 16 after India’s top judge, Surya Kant, referred to some unemployed young people as "parasites" and "cockroaches" during a court hearing. His remarks sparked backlash on social media, although Kant later said he had been misquoted by sections of the media. At the time, Dipke was finishing his graduate studies in the US and looking for a job. He responded to the controversial comments by creating a parody website for the “Cockroach Janta Party,” billing it as a home for India’s "lazy, unemployed and forgotten" and a voice for "millions of young Indians who feel neglected by traditional politics". The website quickly went viral. Dipke has since sought to channel that anger into activism, seizing on a series of examination scandals to highlight what he sees as a deeper crisis in India’s education system and to challenge the political status quo. The 30-year-old, who previously worked as a communications strategist for the opposition Aam Aadmi Party in Delhi, has downplayed his political ambitions.  He said it’s "too early" to say whether his movement could eventually become a registered political party that fields candidates and contests elections, but that he wants to convert the CJP into "a kind of a pressure group that holds the government accountable". Abhijeet Dipke, head of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), requests supporters to maintain peace during a sit-in protest demanding the resignation of Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, in New Delhi, India, Jun 6, 2026. A supporter of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) holds a placard reading "I am Cockroach" during a protest over alleged irregularities in the country's major examinations, in New Delhi on Jun 6, 2026. WHY IS THERE GROWING GEN Z ANGER IN INDIA? While India is the world’s fastest-growing major economy, it’s still not creating enough jobs for the millions of young people entering the workforce each year, including college graduates. Economists say the government’s official figures, which put the unemployment rate for 15 to 29-year-olds at around 10 per cent, don’t provide an accurate picture.  The jobless rate was closer to 40 per cent for 15- to 25-year-olds in 2023, and about 20 per cent for 25- to 29-year-olds, according to Azim Premji University. By comparison, youth unemployment in the US averaged 10 per cent last year for those aged 16 to 24, Bloomberg calculated. Gen Z’s frustration over jobs in India has been compounded by a series of controversies that have shaken confidence in the education system, which has long been viewed as a pathway to upward mobility.  In May, authorities cancelled the country’s largest entrance exam for undergraduate medical studies - which had been taken by more than 2.27 million people - after investigators found indications that the questions had been circulated prior to the test. That same month, test managers released erroneous results for a widely used high school graduation exam. WHY IS THIS A WORRY FOR MODI? The CJP has drawn comparisons to other Gen-Z movements that swept South Asia in recent years.

SINGAPORE:- Three social media platforms have been ordered to block access to 14 posts which “target the Indian community and undermine Singapore’s model of multiculturalism”, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Saturday (Jun 6). The police have issued disabling directions under the Online Criminal Harms Act (OCHA) to block access to the posts on YouTube, Facebook and X, MHA said in a statement. The direction requires the platforms to “take all reasonable steps to disable access by Singapore users to these posts”, it added. Second Minister for Home Affairs Edwin Tong told reporters at Siglap South Community Centre on Saturday that "from what we know so far, the content originated from overseas". Investigations into the problematic content in these posts had revealed that it likely originated from a China-based platform, and was subsequently shared by other platforms and websites. "These videos attack our multi-racial society and they try to divide people based on race. This, however, is not who we are. Every community in Singapore here is valued and everyone has an equal place," said Mr Tong, who is also Minister for Law. "These videos strike at the very foundation of what makes Singapore home for all of us and they undermine the very basis of our society." Mr Tong said the government does not tolerate any narratives that seek to undermine Singapore's racial harmony, "especially when it is propagated by foreigners". In its statement, MHA said Singapore firmly opposes "nativism and xenophobia".  "Any attempt to pit one community against another here must be firmly rejected,” said MHA. "These attacks coming from a foreign source are doubly unacceptable." NARRATIVES CIRCULATED IN CHINESE ONLINE SPACES Mr Tong said that there is currently no evidence to suggest that this is a coordinated campaign by any government. Investigations have shown that the content was likely generated organically by various foreign netizens, he added. "I would say any country seeking to safeguard its social cohesion would agree with us that such content is unacceptable, and would take a similar stance to safeguard their own society," he said. The social media posts, which include videos, portrayvarious claims that Singapore is displaying anxiety over its cultural identity and ethnic politics. Such narratives started circulating online in the Chinese information space in May, MHA said. “Shortly thereafter, online content emerged containing inflammatory narratives about Singapore’s cultural diversity and suggesting that Singapore was being overrun by Indians,” said the ministry.

KUALA LUMPUR:- From Thursday (May 28), motorists driving to Genting Highlands will have to pay a charge depending on their vehicle. Under the new system announced by Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd (LCSB) - the authorised operator for Jalan Genting Highlands - motorists will have to pay between RM3.30 and RM25 (between US$0.80 and US$6.30) for access to the popular hill resort area.  Exemptions are made for those riding motorcycles as well as emergency vehicles at the two entrypoints: Genting Sempah and the Gohtong Jaya roundabout.  Civil servants who work at government institutions on the hill and drive private vehicles are also exempt from the road fee.  Cars and vans in Class 1 will be charged RM5 per entry, while medium-sized lorries in Class 2 will be charged RM15. Heavy lorries under Class 3 will be charged RM25, while taxis - which fall under vehicles in Class 4 - will be charged RM3.30. Buses, meanwhile, will be charged RM5.  Vehicles under Classes 2, 3, 5 and 5 must also enter through the “Lorong Khas” lanes or licence plate recognition (LPR) lanes, said LCSB. In the second phase of the charge rollout, LCSB will also extend “preferential schemes” from Jun 28 to permanent residents of Genting Highland. They can register up to two Class 1 vehicles per household.  In the meantime, these residents will not be impacted by the road charge.  Eligible permanent residents can opt for a rate 10 per cent lower than the standard road charge, or apply for a six-month season pass which entitles holders to unlimited entries into Genting Highlands through the LPR or “Lorong Khas” lanes during the pass’ validity period. Jalan Genting Highland, a privately owned 24km road owned by Genting Malaysia Berhad, provides access to popular tourist hotspots including Resorts World Genting and other hotel resorts not under Genting Malaysia’s properties. Genting Highlands is located some 60km away from the Kuala Lumpur city centre.  The fee structure was first announced on Nov 13 last year, when Genting Malaysia Berhad said it will soon charge vehicles entering the hill, though details were not provided then. The company had said the charge was necessary due to steep and escalating costs of maintaining the road and its slopes, which it had paid for since the 1960s. "Heavy usage on Jalan Genting Highlands has caused a tremendous amount of wear and tear, and requires constant maintenance to ensure the safety of the road users," Genting Malaysia Berhad said in a statement then, adding that the private road charge is the most sustainable way to defray upkeep costs. Deputy Works Minister Ahmad Maslan said later on Nov 17 that any charges to Genting Highlands should not penalise local residents, workers or those using the route daily. "In our view, tolls should not be applied to daily users such as local workers or residents, nor to those using the road for social purposes," he had said in parliament. Ahmad added that excessively high fees could discourage tourists and affect visitor numbers. "If the charges are too high, the number of visitors may decline. Other tourist destinations do not impose such fees, so these factors must be considered."   He added that the charges should be called vehicle charges and not tolls, as they are levied on users of a private road, and should not be confused with 33 toll concessions currently operating on highways in the country.

SINGAPORE:- A Universal Studios Singapore (USS) performer who suffered a medical emergency during a training session last week has died, Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) said on Tuesday (May 26). “We are deeply saddened by the passing of a WaterWorld performer and send our condolences to the family, our show vendor and his fellow performers during this very difficult time,” said RWS executive vice president of attractions and destination experience Lena Lee in response to CNA queries.  The performer, who was engaged by an appointed vendor for USS’ WaterWorld attraction, was taken to hospital after suffering a medical emergency during training on May 19. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) earlier said it received a call for assistance at 30 Sentosa Gateway at about 10.35am that day, and one person was taken to Singapore General Hospital. The man's fellow performers saw that he was in distress during the session and provided assistance before emergency services were called, RWS earlier said on May 22.  It also said then that it was reviewing the incident.  RWS, the operator of USS, has not given any further details about the man, or the nature of the medical emergency. The WaterWorld attraction at USS is based on the 1995 film and features live-action stunts and special effects involving fire and water.

SINGAPORE:- Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) rates will be increased by S$1 at two locations from Jun 29, bringing prices to as much as S$5 at certain timings.  The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday (May 25) that traffic has built up along various stretches of expressways based on its monitoring of traffic conditions in April.  “To manage congestion, ERP rates at these locations will be increased by S$1 with effect from Jun 29,” it said in a press release. The new rates are: “Motorists are encouraged to plan their journeys and consider alternative routes,” LTA said. LTA also said it is considering reinstating ERP operations for the Orchard area, which has been unpriced since April 2020, after closely monitoring traffic conditions. “Speeds within Orchard have persistently remained below optimal since October 2025,” the authority said. “If road congestion deteriorates further next quarter, LTA will resume ERP operations for the Orchard Cordon.” Rates for the other previously announced timeslots/gantries remain unchanged. “LTA will continue to monitor traffic speeds and congestion levels closely and assess if ERP rates need to be further adjusted,” the authority said. SCHOOL HOLIDAY DISCOUNT During the June school holiday period from Jun 2 to Jun 28, there will be a discount of ERP rates at six locations for 18 specified time periods, LTA announced. The discounted rates are: “These locations and time slots were identified in anticipation of lower traffic demand,” LTA said.  “The rates will revert to the prevailing ERP rates from Jun
