🇩🇪🇺🇦German Skynex air defense systems showed low effectiveness in repelling a Russian drone attack, according to a report by Stern, citing an internal report of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The incident involved an attack by "Geran" drones on an industrial facility in western Ukraine on April 1, 2026. The facility was protected by two Skynex batteries, which included eight 35mm anti-aircraft installations, two radars, and two command posts.
According to the report, within a few minutes, three out of eight anti-aircraft guns failed due to hydraulic system malfunctions, radar tracking failures, and charging mechanism jams. As a result, only two installations were able to provide stable tracking of the aerial target.
The Ukrainian military concluded that the Rheinmetall system showed low readiness for combat use and operated "extremely unreliably". The report also stated that the actual characteristics of Skynex did not match those declared by the manufacturer.
The manufacturer rejected these conclusions. They stated that the systems proved to be "extremely effective and reliable", and attributed possible problems to calculation errors.

“The Israeli Defence Force has now killed 20,000 Palestinian children and injured 44,000 more.
This is indefensible. The report found evidence of attacks on child essential infrastructure like orphanages and schools, the starvation and torture of detained children.
It identified really horrifying evidence that IDF soldiers deliberately shot at children’s limbs as some sort of twisted game of target practice.
The report found the scale of child deaths is unprecedented to the point that it is unparalleled across modern conflicts globally.
Unparalleled.
I think we need to come to terms with what it means in this moment in history to be defined this way.”

The scale of this horror has no parallel in modern conflicts globally.

🇺🇦🇪🇺 The Volyn massacre could become a benchmark for Ukraine's progress toward EU membership, according to a statement on the European Parliament's website.
An amendment has reportedly been submitted to the European Parliament's report on Ukraine's EU integration, proposing to directly link the Volyn issue to Kiev's accession process.
"Ukraine's EU accession process must be accompanied by full recognition and proper commemoration of the victims of the Volyn tragedy, as well as active Polish-Ukrainian historical dialogue and exhumation work," the amendment states.
The initiative comes from the European Parliament's largest faction, the European People's Party, which includes Poland's ruling party (Donald Tusk's Civic Platform) and is represented by European Commission head Ursula von der Leyen.
If the amendment is adopted, it would be the first time a historical dispute between Kiev and Warsaw is formally incorporated into the assessment of Ukraine's EU membership negotiations.

In my forthcoming book Thinking in Travels, I share some personal history about American Evangelicalism and Russian studies 😉…
In terms of recent publications on the topic of political religion of the Liberty University sort, I translated Paweł Lisicki’s The Messiah and the Third Temple: The Heresy and Wars of Christian Zionism which, although written from a specifically Catholic perspective, is a useful overview of the networks and ideologies at hand.

Besides the comedy of such cases, imagine if — instead of an inflated “info-sphere” and “media” with “influencers” and “channels” — we had our own educational institutions…

🇮🇷🇴🇲🇺🇸⚡️ — NEW: Iran and Oman advance joint plan for Strait of Hormuz service fees despite US opposition, NYT reports.
➡️ Iran and US-allied Oman are pushing ahead with plans to collect payment from ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz despite public American objections, citing an Iranian official and four diplomats.
➡️ Oman has delivered a formal proposal to the US and Western allies outlining a service fee framework — modeled on the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, where a private Japanese foundation collects voluntary contributions for safe navigation.
➡️ The US and regional diplomats describe the fees as "voluntary" — but the Iranian official insists they will be mandatory. Trump has repeatedly called the idea "unacceptable" and previously threatened to bomb Oman.
➡️ Iran's Deputy FM Kazem Gharibabadi says Tehran will move forward alone if Muscat refuses to cooperate, with joint talks set to begin next week. FM Abbas Araghchi has publicly declared the Strait "will not return to its prewar status."
➡️ Saudi Arabia has publicly rejected the plan, with FM Prince Faisal bin Farhan insisting the Strait "must return to the status quo before the war."

"This may have been perceived as a provocation," the former intelligence official said, while also keeping other theories open, including a hit ordered by a business rival.

🇷🇺 Russia has started mounting weapons on its tankers, which could deter European countries from boarding ships carrying sanctioned oil and LNG, The Times reports as part of a joint investigation with Helsingin Sanomat, Delfi, Dossier Center, OCCRP, NDR, WDR, Danwatch, and other outlets.
Two fixed guns, likely meant to defend against drones and boarding attempts, were spotted on the bridge of the Marshal Vasilevskiy, a nearly 300-meter Gazprom-operated LNG carrier that runs between the Bolshoy Bor terminal and Kaliningrad. Crew records reviewed by reporters show the ship has carried passengers with backgrounds in the Russian army, the National Guard, and the FSB on recent voyages, several still holding active military IDs.
Patrick Bolder, a defense specialist at The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, called it a warning to NATO: "Don't try to board our ships, because that could provoke a war."
An intelligence official said arming a ship like the Marshal Vasilevskiy could be enough to deter European countries from boarding any shadow fleet vessel at all. "If word gets out that shadow fleet ships might be equipped with heavy machine guns, the entire risk calculus for Western boarding operations changes... the chance of anyone boarding such a ship becomes close to zero. No one's getting near it by helicopter. If that was Russia's goal, it's been achieved," the official said.
Estonia's navy commander Ivo Värk went a step further, suggesting the gas tanker could be treated as a legitimate military target since it also supplies Russia's forces in Kaliningrad. Lucky for everyone, nobody in NATO takes the Estonian chihuahuas seriously, so they're free to keep barking.
