Trade Trends Reflect Some Cold War Tendencies, An Analysis Suggests And Cautions Against Poverty Threat The concept of fragmentation, which encapsulates nations reassessing their trade routes and forming rival blocs, is not a new phenomenon. In fact, it bears striking similarities to the early years of the Cold War, as a recent analysis suggests. However, the key difference lies in the magnitude of this trend. From 1945 to 1980, the disparities were far more pronounced, both in terms of their scope and breadth. The International Monetary Fund, a renowned authority in world economics, has issued a warning in its analysis titled 'Fragmentation During Cold War And Now'. It cautions that the world is witnessing a division into three blocs: a Western-led bloc by the E.U. and U.S., a China-centric bloc (comprising mostly emerging economies), and a group of unaligned nations led by India. Notably, the trade between the U.S. and China, the world's most significant economic relationship in terms of value and turnover, has further contracted. The average weighted quarter-on-quarter trade growth between countries leaning towards the U.S. and those leaning towards China, from 2022Q2 to 2023Q3, was nearly five percentage points lower than the average quarterly weighted trade growth from 2017Q1 to 2022Q1. This led to a 2 per cent decline in trade value within blocs. The decline in US-China trade was a significant contributor to this drop, but it was not the sole factor. While the decline in US-China trade was a significant factor in the overall drop in trade within blocs, it was not the sole cause. The geopolitical risks, further heightened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, also played a part. However, it's crucial to note that the new trade patterns of Vietnam, Mexico, India, and Indonesia were the main catalysts for change, contributing to a substantial 12-20 per cent decrease in overall trade within blocs. IMF analysts caution that the costs of fragmentation will be significant, particularly for emerging economies. In the Cold War era, global trade accounted for a mere 16 percent of total world trade, whereas today, it stands at a staggering 45 per cent. This shift will undoubtedly impact profits, potentially leading to a decline in wages worldwide, ushering in an era of lackluster growth and more widespread poverty.
