In the IELTS reading test you may be asked to match headings to sections of text. This type of question tests your ability to understand the main idea of each paragraph. Headings are short sentences that summarise the information in a paragraph. You have to pick the one that best summarises the information in a paragraph. You will be given between 5 and 7 headings and asked to match each paragraph in the reading text to one heading. There are always more headings than paragraphs. Learning and using vocabulary is a lot like lifting weights. You can only lift what you’re capable of and you can only make incremental improvements. Those improvements are only possible through hard work. This is a 16kg kettle bell. A few months ago it felt very heavy but now it’s quite easy to throw around because I lifted it over and over again. However, if I try and lift a 32kg kettle bell I’d probably injure myself. Vocabulary is just the same. You can only use what you’re capable of using. You can improve a little through hard work but if you try and use vocabulary that is way above your current level, you’ll mess it up. In the context of the IELTS test, this means you’ll make lots of mistakes and this will lower your score. Keep working, keep improving and use what you have now.
