Translocation of Chital and Sambar to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary
◾️In a significant move to promote the long-term conservation of Asiatic lions, the forest department in Gujarat has started translocating spotted deer (Chital) and Sambar from Gir forest to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary (BWS).
◾️Forest officials caught 23 spotted deer from Gir using the boma technique and transported them to Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Porbandar in special vehicles.
◾️In the boma technique, animals are lured into an enclosure by chasing them through a funnel-like fence.
This initiative will increase the population of spotted deer in Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, which will help in the long-term conservation of Asiatic lions and other large predators in the sanctuary.◾️Spread over 192.31 sq km, the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary is an important habitat for the natural propagation of the Asiatic lions as the ecological conditions and vegetation structure of Barda resembles many parts of the Gir forests. 👉@UPSCNAVIGATOR_ENGLISH
