NTC vs. PTC Thermistor
This image compares two common types of thermistors: NTC (Negative Temperature Coefficient) and PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient).
NTC Thermistor (Left):
Resistance decreases as temperature increases.
Highly sensitive to temperature changes.
Commonly used for temperature sensing, measurement, battery monitoring, and inrush current limiting.
PTC Thermistor (Right):
Resistance increases as temperature increases.
Acts as a self-protecting component by limiting current when overheated.
Commonly used for overcurrent protection, resettable fuses, motor protection, and self-regulating heating applications.
Key Difference:
NTC: Higher temperature → Lower resistance.
PTC: Higher temperature → Higher resistance.
Both thermistors are temperature-dependent resistors, but they serve different purposes depending on how their resistance responds to changes in temperature.
