7. Nationalism is the conscious effort by Africans to do away with foreign domination and exploitation in order to establish self rule.
Firstly, one internal factor that promoted Nationalism was unemployment and failure to honour promises. After the second World War, soldiers were promised good wages and salaries as well as better condition of services. All these promises by the British didn't happen in reality. There was also high rate of unemployment among the youths. This made them bitter and therefore the educated elites rose up to fight against the doings of the British.
Secondly, shortage of goods and price hikes influenced Nationalism. Basic goods such as milk, soap, sugar which had always been imported from overseas was in shortage. The colonial powers during the war used all moneys on military equipment to support the armed forces. As a result the shortage of the shortage of basic goods, cost of living shot up and this influenced Nationalism.
Thirdly, urbanisation also influenced Nationalism. Most of the people who lived in the rural areas had moved to the coastal cities in such of white color jobs. The newspapers also educated the natives on the need to fight for constitutional ammendments.
Fourthly, exploitation of natural resources by the British awakened the consciousness of the Africans to fight for their right. The British exploited the gold, copper and timber and also bought them at cheap prices to feed their local industries abroad. This was seen by the Africans as a cheat. They also wanted to owned lands which belonged to the natives. The natives in turn decided to fight against these practices by the British.
Lastly, Discrimination in the civil service was another reason for the struggle for Nationalism. Africans were not been given higher wages and salaries and also most of them were not given the position they seemed fit. The British only recruited only the whites to occupy positions and this called for Nationalism by the Africans

(b). Firstly, Access to Trade, Ine notable factor that accounted for the inter-ethnic conflicts in the Gold Coast particularly between the inland states and the coastal was trade. The inland states such as Asante wanted direct access to the coast to trade with the Europeans. On the other hand, the coastal states also wanted to play the role of the middlemen between the European traders and the inland states.
Moreover, Introduction of Firearms. The introduction of firearms by the Europeans also served as incentive for the frequent and bloody inter-ethnic wars that developed because the Europeans sold guns and gun power to states. The availability of these deadly weapons from the middle of the 17th century intensified inter-conflict in the Gold Coast.
Furthermore, Harbouring of Criminals and Refugees. In- ethic rivalry intensified as a result of the harbouring of criminals and political refugees by other states. Example, in 1807, during the reign of the Asantehene, Osei Bonsu, the Fante chiefs refused to hand over the Asantehene two wanted men.
Finally Desire to secure control of the trade routes. One of the inter-ethic conflict in the Gold Coast also intensified mainly as a result of the fact that each state made an attempt to secure the total control of the trade routes to the major market centres.
