Language, Dignity & Mental Colonialism
-Language is a medium of expression, not a measure of intelligence —> fluency in English cannot be equated with knowledge, competence or merit.
-Mocking pronunciation is intellectual arrogance —> ridiculing someone’s accent reflects the prejudices of the listener, not the ability of the speaker.
-Colonialism can survive psychologically after political freedom —> treating English as a symbol of superiority reflects linguistic colonialism/mental slavery.
-Global success does not require abandoning the mother tongue —> China, Japan, Germany and South Korea demonstrate that science, innovation and economic progress can coexist with linguistic self-confidence.
-Language hierarchy creates social hierarchy —> English proficiency often becomes a proxy for class and status, turning language from a means of communication into an instrument of exclusion.
-Mother tongue strengthens identity and confidence —> respect for one’s language nurtures cultural rootedness, dignity and social belonging.
-English should be a skill, not a status symbol —> it can expand opportunities, but should never determine a person’s social worth.
-Democracy demands linguistic dignity —> genuine equality requires respecting citizens irrespective of their language, accent or pronunciation.
Quote: “A language should open doors of opportunity, not become a wall of superiority.”
