It was that familiar cold crisp air, the cleanest feeling in your lungs as you became intoxicated with the atmosphere of your will’s triumph. It was a long night. Still, you could piece it all together second for second years later as if it was merely just another night. This was the night that many realized the facade was broken when they realized they had finally lost their grip, and their days were numbered and finished. It was when the man, and not just a small portion of him, truly brought the torch to the sky and brought the cities to heel. I cannot forget how my lungs were so cooled, my mind calm yet jittery, and the look of the people who were neither angry nor scared but understanding. That was the night where the dead smiled, where the living marched, where the last of us prevailed after endless eons.

Today, we swear it to ourselves that tomorrow should be wounded. Even just a little bit. If every day you take your heartiest swing at the world, you've done your job. Some of us will go for its ankles, its knees, or its stomach. Some of us will go straight for the eyes, the neck, or the heart. Either way, it's all more than anyone else will ever do.
