Canadian DIY collective Respire have been crafting cinematic, genre-defying soundscapes since forming in the bitter winter of 2013, when they spent evenings and weekends honing their craft in a frigid west-end Toronto basement. Blending lush, emotive orchestration with the fervor and aggression of blackened hardcore, the seven-piece aim to create hopeful music for troubling times. Written over two years and produced over six months, 2020's Black Line weaves an anti-fascist narrative of redemption against the backdrop of impending global climate catastrophe. It finds Respire turning away from the sickness of the self and onto the sickness ailing the world. Yet despite its towering inferno of anguish, Black Line is a call to arms - to burn away the ugliness that threatens to divide and destroy us, to reclaim agency in a world spiraling out of control, to find beauty in destruction and hope in rebirth. Light: Raito Scenography Location: Het Hem Information: Pascal Pinkert, Jippe van Niel and Aniek de Rooij's ‘De Ambassade’ turns out distinctly DIY sounds that can be eerie and industrial or doused in more avant-pop melodies. The Dutch lyrics are an integral part of their music, celebrating free speech and thought. After releasing their debut album, considered to be one of the best Dutch LPs in 2019, this summer they put out a third consecutive 7" for Knekelhuis that showed a darker side that proved as alluring as ever. Background information Dekmantel Connects: Between December 14th and 23rd 2020, Dekmantel Connects offered a carefully curated programme covering a broad spectrum of electronic music interests. Dekmantel Connects stimulates thought and conversation, offers ideas for aspiring music professionals as well as enjoying music, all while making connections between different aspects of the (electronic) music world.
