The joke is this: the small bird, the CPU, is just going about, executing some instructions. What it is doesn't matter, it's just moving and adding some values. Then comes the keyboard with a hardware interrupt. This makes the CPU stop everything it's doing so it can work on the important message from the keyboard...which happens to be a single keystroke.: There are two ways of knowing if a button has been pressed (or the mouse was moved, or a message came from the network, or a timer ticked, etc); polling or interrupting. If you poll, then you have to spend a little bit of time actively checking if someone's pressing a button. Since you don't know when that'll happen, you literally have to check all the time, which is incredibly wasteful. The alternative, interrupts, means that there's a way of telling the CPU to stop everything for a bit and handle some external stimuli. This is way better, because you don't spend an incredible amount of time checking just in case. P.s. explained Dev meme is okish meme?
