White Bellbird (Procnias albus) 🌿🐦 The White Bellbird inhabits the forests of Guyana, Venezuela, and the Brazilian state of Pará. The male is known for its white plumage and a unique, long, fleshy appendage hanging from its beak, resembling a single mustache. Females, on the other hand, are olive-green with yellowish streaks underneath and lack the distinctive mustache. Fun Fact: Male White Bellbirds are famous for producing the loudest bird call in the world, reaching up to 125 decibels! To put that into perspective, a rock concert is around 84 decibels, a car horn is 110 decibels, and a pneumatic drill is 120 decibels. Only a jet engine (150 decibels) is louder. Safety Note: The safe sound level for human ears is 85 decibels, so keeping a White Bellbird in a cage is... not recommended! 😅

But the male was in for a "serious talk" about responsibility... Interesting Fact: Lionesses are the primary hunters in a pride, while males are responsible for protecting the territory and cubs. A lion's roar can be heard up to 5 miles (8 kilometers) away! 🦁🌿

Serengeti National Park (Tanzania). A lioness protects her cubs from a pack of hyenas and scolds her lazy husband: — And where are you looking?! And he has to roar belatedly across the entire savannah... The father of a small family was sleeping in the bushes. He snored so loudly that this sound attracted wild African dogs. But they didn't dare to wake the king of the jungle, especially when they spotted easier prey: three little lion cubs. The lioness left them in the care of her negligent "husband" when she went hunting. The dogs, flattening their ears, headed towards the cubs, but then the lioness came out from behind the bushes, showing them with her menacing appearance that they were not welcome here. After a short game of tag, the dogs left the territory of the lion's family. Only then did the mother calm down and began to call the cubs with a soft and low roar. One after another, they came to their mother, alive and well.

This operator spent 76 days in the snows of the Yukon, filming the Canadian lynx and its hunt for hares. Gradually, he tamed the animal to himself and his equipment, earning its trust and forming friendly relations between them. The Canadian lynx is smaller than the common one: body length 85-115 cm, height at the withers 60-65 cm, and weight 8-14 kg. The basis of its diet is the snowshoe hare (up to 75%), with the remaining part consisting of birds, small rodents (squirrels, beavers, muskrats), and ungulates (red deer, bighorn sheep). In years when the snowshoe hare population decreases, these lynxes practically do not reproduce - that is, their population is regulated by the amount of available food. This cat lives in the forested regions of Alaska, Canada, as well as the states of Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Colorado. Fun fact: The Canadian lynx has the largest feet relative to its body size of any cat species, which helps it to walk on snow and hunt more efficiently. 🐾❄️

When you're not at the top of the food chain and can't rely on your brains or muscles to avoid being eaten, you come up with other tricks. The animal kingdom employs all sorts of defensive mechanisms, and one of the most remarkable is mimicry. The lichen bush cricket, Markia hystrix, is a master of effective camouflage. Lichen growth on trees is the perfect hiding spot for this insect, which blends seamlessly with its surroundings. This cricket lives in South America among lichen growths and feeds on them too—beyond that, not much is known about it. At least we managed to spot and film it. 🤷‍♂️

Whiptail Scorpion (Amblypygi) - An Ancient Inhabitant of Our Planet Did you know that whiptail scorpions have been around for over 358 million years? Their fossilized remains are a testament to their ancient lineage. These creatures are heat and moisture-loving, thriving in tropical climates across Africa, Australia, India, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Haiti, Malaysia, Indonesia, and many other countries. Unlike other arachnids, whiptail scorpions are relatively small, ranging from 5 mm to 4.5-5 cm in size. However, their long, spindly legs can grow up to 25 cm or more, often exceeding the length of their bodies by five times! Some individuals even have a leg span of 40-60 cm. Despite their intimidating appearance, whiptail scorpions are harmless to humans. They lack venom glands and silk-spinning organs, posing a threat only to small insects, which they consume as food. 🕷️🌿

Mountain (Southern) Viscacha (Lagidium viscacia) - a rodent from the chinchilla family, inhabiting Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. Visacchas live in mountainous areas with sparse vegetation at altitudes of 2400-5000 m. They resemble rabbits with long, squirrel-like tails. The body length of mountain viscachas reaches 40 cm, and their tail up to 32 cm, with weight ranging from 1.5 to 3 kg. Visacchas are diurnal, most active near dawn and dusk. They feed on grass, mosses, and lichens, not requiring water as they obtain it from plants. People hunt viscachas for their fur and meat, leading to a decline in their population. In the wild, mountain viscachas live only 3 years, but in captivity with proper care, they can live up to 19 years. Fun Fact: Viscachas have a unique adaptation to their high-altitude habitat. Their kidneys are highly efficient at conserving water, allowing them to survive in arid conditions. 🌵🐾

Kakapo (Owl Parrot) Strigops habroptila - the only living flightless parrot and the heaviest parrot species, endemic to New Zealand, leading a nocturnal lifestyle. The body length of the kakapo is about 60 cm, and the weight in adulthood is from 2 to 4 kg. The facial feathers form a facial disc, like that of an owl, and may perform a locational function. The voice is a hoarse caw, transitioning into shrill unpleasant sounds. One of the unusual characteristics of the kakapo is a strong but pleasant smell, similar to the smell of flowers and honey or beeswax. Although kakapos cannot fly, they are excellent climbers and can climb to the top of a tall tree. Then they can descend with a "parachute," that is, jump with their wings open. In this way, they can glide 20-50 meters at a 45° angle. Mainly herbivorous, feeding on local plants (ferns), seeds, berries, pollen, and nectar.

Golden Leaf Monkey (Trachypithecus auratus) inhabits the rainforests of Indonesia - the island of Java and nearby small islands. Like other langurs, these monkeys have a long tail up to a meter in length, while their body length is about 55 cm. They are active during the day, spending most of their time in trees. Their diet is predominantly plant-based: they eat leaves, fruits, flowers, and buds. Sometimes, insect larvae are included in their diet. Their digestive system is adapted to digest coarse plant food. But there's one thing scientists don't mention! Just look at these gloomy, serious faces and it becomes clear: these are philosophers-misanthropes... 🌳🐒🍃 Fun Fact: Golden leaf monkeys have a unique way of communicating using over 20 different vocalizations, each conveying a specific message to their troop! 🗣️💬

Black-bellied Whistling-Duck (Fulvous Whistling-Duck) Dendrocygna autumnalis - a medium-sized waterfowl native to the tropical regions of the Americas. 🦆 Ducklings typically leave their nests just one or two days after hatching. While the parents waited for them to jump into the pond, a young alligator approached - but the mother feigned a broken wing to lure it away from her family. 💡 Interesting Fact: These ducks are known for their distinctive whistling calls, which are often heard at dusk and dawn. They are also one of the few duck species where both males and females incubate the eggs and care for the young.

Danaus plexippus - The Monarch Butterfly One of the most famous butterflies in North America. In the 19th century, this species was introduced to New Zealand and Australia. In Europe, they can be found on the Canary Islands and Madeira. Monarch butterflies are known for their annual migrations from southern Canada and the northern US states to Florida, California, and Mexico from August until the first frosts, traveling up to 3-4,000 km. After wintering in the mountains of Mexico, these butterflies embark on their journey back north. This is the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in the Mexican state of Michoacán, and a hummingbird robot used to observe them. 🦋🌳 Fun Fact: Monarch butterflies can live up to nine months, much longer than other butterflies, due to their long migration journey. 🌟

Stork and the Doomed Chick Nature isn't cruel, it's practical. Feeling that she can't feed three chicks, the mother stork chooses the weakest one and pushes it out of the nest, so the remaining chicks get more food. The unlucky chick will most likely perish, but there's a chance that a human will find and raise it. And then, those of you who are currently scolding the stork will cry over the poor stork living with humans: "Aaaah, the bird should live in the wild!" Because you can't please everyone 🤷‍♂️ Interesting Fact: Storks are known for their long migrations. The black stork, for example, can fly up to 7,000 km from its breeding grounds to its wintering grounds!

The Prehensile-Tailed Porcupine (Coendou prehensilis) is found in tropical forests from Colombia and Venezuela in the south to northern Argentina. This arboreal creature rarely descends to the ground, except for drinking water. It moves easily but slowly on land and is active at night. During the day, it sleeps high up in the trees, typically between 6-10 meters. Prehensile-tailed porcupines live in small groups. Their easily detachable quills serve as an effective defense against predators. When captured, the animal curls up into a ball. It feeds on leaves, buds, and fruits. Occasionally, it raids guava, corn, and banana plantations. This small animal has a body length of up to 65 cm and weighs up to 5 kg. Its quills are short, thick, and three-colored: pale yellow on top and bottom, with a black center. The back is black, the belly is gray. The tail is prehensile, usually without quills, and measures 30–50 cm in length.

Himalayan Monal-Pheasant (Tragopan satyra) The Himalayan Monal-Pheasant, or Tragopan satyra, is a member of the pheasant family and inhabits the Himalayas across India, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and Southern China. The entire genus of tragopans, also known as horned pheasants, is named after the ancient goat-footed god Pan for their distinctive "horns" and "beard." The species name "satyra" is also derived from ancient mythology, referring to the same "horns." These birds prefer damp, mountainous forests with dense undergrowth of rhododendrons and bamboo. They can also be found along riverbanks and streams overgrown with thick shrubs and diverse vegetation. Fun Fact: The Himalayan Monal-Pheasant is the national bird of Nepal and is known for its striking and vibrant plumage, especially during mating season. Sadly, their population is threatened by poaching and increasing tourism, which leads to habitat loss and disturbance.

Desman (Desmana moschata) is not a rodent, as it may seem, but a mole relative. This curious creature has a body length of 18-22 cm, a tail of the same length, and weighs up to 500 g. The Desman has a thick, velvety, and very strong fur. Its fur is unique: the hairs widen towards the top and narrow towards the root. The Desman leads a semi-aquatic lifestyle. Most of the year, they live in burrows with one entrance each, which opens underwater. Desmans require a large amount of food. An adult can eat an amount of food equal to its weight in just one day. During the summer, the Desman mainly eats benthic fauna, such as caddisfly larvae, leeches, gastropods, and other similar creatures. In winter, their diet also includes various plant foods and even small fish. Fun Fact: The Desman's fur is so strong and water-resistant that it was once used to make fur coats and hats! 🐾

Himalayan Monal (Lophophorus impejanus) is a pheasant and the national bird of Nepal. Females are brown, while males are a riot of colors with iridescent plumage and a green crest with white tips. They fly well but reluctantly, like many other game birds. The monal has a strong, slightly downward-curved beak and primarily feeds on seeds and plant parts, but also eats insects. They emerge from their daytime hiding spots in the bushes to feed on more open slopes, usually in the morning and evening. In summer, they ascend to the mountains for feeding, up to the level of eternal snow. You can typically see small groups of these birds, consisting of one male and several females. Fun Fact: The Himalayan Monal is known for its stunning display during mating season, where the male's colors become even more vibrant as it performs a dazzling dance to attract a mate.

American Black Vulture (Coragyps atratus) grooming a Capybara Did you know? The American Black Vulture, also called the Black Vulture or Urubu, is a scavenger found in the southern U.S., all of Central America, and most of South America. They feed on carrion and can be spotted near dumps, slaughterhouses, sewers, and highways. Occasionally, they hunt for young herons, domestic ducklings, and their eggs. They may also attack newborn calves, small birds, and small mammals like raccoons, opossums, and young turtles. They're not picky eaters and sometimes consume ripe or rotten fruits and vegetables. Watch as this Urubu picks ticks off a Capybara, who, as always, remains unperturbed and laid-back! 🦅🐾
