| 8 | HOW TO SOLVE: OET LISTENING.
During the Listening exam, you will listen to several healthcare-related recordings and will be expected to answer 42 questions. You will have just 40 minutes to complete the test.
But what are the Listening exam tips and strategies and how do you pass the OET Listening test?
The OET Listening exam will test a number of techniques at the same time.
The OET listening exam can be difficult because you’ll be expected to:
Listen to the recording
Read the questions
And write your answer
… all at the same time!
Not only does it take practice to develop your multi-tasking skills but it also requires a good understanding of the relevant exam techniques.
So … What are these techniques?
Listening Part A is all about prediction
In Part A of the exam, you will hear a conversation between a healthcare professional and a patient and will be expected to FILL IN THE MISSING WORDS.
At the start oftest you will have around 1 minute to read the questions and we would recommend to use this time to make a GUESS or a PREDICTION as to what the answer MIGHT be.
Listening Part B requires for you to understand keywords.
In Part B of the exam, you will hear SIX SHORT WORKPLACE recordings. These will usually involve two colleagues discussing something hospital or clinic.
REMEMBER: Listening exam Parts B and C will use synonym so you may not hear the exact keyword in the recording, they might use another word instead!
Listening Part C requires you to train your attention
In Part C of the exam, you will hear two longer recordings and will need to answer eight questions for each.
Many of the techniques you use in Part B can also be used in Part C.
The challenges in this part of the exam are not losing your focus. The recording can often be long (and in truth a little boring!) and it is easy for your mind to wander.
The best way to improve this is to practice keeping your attention throughout.
We would recommend to:
*Make sure that you have completed at least 4-5 *Listening exams before taking your test.
*Practice completing tests under test conditions (and time yourself to make sure!)
*Record your score after hearing the recording one time and then listen a second time to pick up any incorrect answers.

| 12 | Part C: similarly, this is the trickiest one. Start by numbering the paragraphs, as the questions are usually ordered as one or two questions for each paragraph. Do not read the text just number the paragraphs and move to the questions. Start by reading the question, understand what they want, then read the corresponding paragraph, only then start reading the answers. By reading the answers before reading the paragraph you’ll just be wasting your time trying to understand something you don’t have a clue about, after reading the paragraph you’ll be able to go through the answers more quickly.
-Speaking: Future land.
Find yourself a dedicated study partner, we used to practice two cards daily. A noticeable improvement was noted as weeks passed by, so I suggest that you practice speaking on a daily basis. Part A listening audios also helped me a bit in speaking, observe how doctors in their scenarios interact with their patients, their expressions, how they ask questions, and how they respond to patient’s concerns.
-Writing:
I attended a course, Dr. Ashgan’s Course. Her course is just perfect. She explains all four parts of the exam. The course helped me the most in writing, she explained all the possible letter scenarios: short referrals, long referrals, urgent referral letter, child letters, letter to psychiatrist, discharge letters, letters to allied health (occupational therapist, nurses). In addition, there were sessions on connectors, grammar, and tenses. I wrote a total of 10 letters, one for each type. The speaking part of the course was also really helpful, in three sessions she explains the dos and don’ts of speaking so this was a solid ground to start practice from.
-General advice:
ABC Radio!
Consistency, parts of the exam are skills that you can build by consistently practicing them, and also you can lose them if you didn’t practice for along duration.
Find you a study partner.
Don’t get intimidated by the unsuccessful experiences. This group helped a lot during my preparation but also it was frustrating at times, people reflect and generalize their bad experience to everyone, the test isn’t easy but it isn’t hard as well, it’s doable if you know the strategies for each part and you practiced them well. The level of difficulty was very similar to that of Jahshan.
Good luck.

| 13 | Here is my experience, I hope it helps.
-Date: 19th of march, 2022.
-Duration of preparation: 2 months. When I took the decision of taking the 19th of march exam, I had 5 months, but at that time, I studied in an on/off fashion and was just getting familiar to the exam. During the 2 months prior to the test, I used to study for an average of 2-4 hours per day.
-Listening: Jahshan, YouTube (OET 2.0), ABC Radio.
Regarding OET 2.0 test, I used to solve only part A, in order to increase my chances of achieving higher scores in this part, as its usually the easiest one.
ABC Radio Health Report in my opinion is one of the most important parts of preparation. For me, it was a daily habit and I suggest that you make it so too. I used to first listen to the audio actively, trying to understand what they were discussing and focusing on every word and then re-listen, but this time while reading the transcript. This will help you to improve your listening skills, your speaking skills (by observing their pronunciation), and your vocabulary (which will help you in reading too).
Part A: Aim for acing this part, or losing two-three marks maximumly. Use the 30 seconds given for reading the questions as well as the few seconds at first where they explain the test process to highlight around the empty spaces. While highlighting try to anticipate the answers, for example will it be a drug, a name of a disease, a description of a symptom, a duration, an investigation finding etc.. this will help you to know what to listen for while the audio is playing.
Part B: This part is straightforward, and you can easily get a high score on it. Read and highlight the keywords in the question and answers. Then listen carefully while the audio is playing, ignore the answers as it can be quite difficult to focus on the audio while trying to exclude or include an answer. The audio usually have parts of each answer, as an attempt to throw you off, you can easily choose a wrong answer if you weren’t paying attention. Highlight, then focus on the audio and choose your answer only when the audio is finished.
Part C: As you all may know, this is the trickiest part. The key again is good highlighting, however this time – as you will be solving while the audio is on – you highlight the words that will help you know when they are making a transition to the next question. Highlight time frames (e.g: What did doctor X think when he FIRSTLY encountered the patient), patient names, drug names, setting (clinic, physiotherapy session, etc..), disease names. You get the idea, you highlight so that when they mention the word you highlighted, you know that you need to move to the next question.
-Reading: Jahshan, Benchmark.
For Benchmark, I only solved part A, for the same reason as listening, to increase my chances of making the most of the easiest part.
Part A: you got 15 minutes to both read and solve the questions. Dedicate 2-3 minutes maximumly for reading. You don’t have to read the texts/tables/figures thoroughly, just skim through it while highlighting the parts you think are important in each text (you’ll be able to identify these more efficiently as you practice). After skimming through the text, write a brief description near the text heading to help you later on as you solve the questions (e.g: “types of fractures”, “how to treat fractures”, “Casting”). Remember that no matter how much you spend on reading the texts you will have to get back to the text again while solving so there is no need to waste more than three minutes on reading. Also, Read the things written in a smaller font above or below tables and figures carefully as they usually ask about them.
Part B: the technique I used was to read the question, highlight the answers, then read the extract. The answer is usually given on the last few lines, they add a lot of irrelevant info, so read the question carefully to understand what exactly do they want, the general purpose of the extract or a specific info. | 0 |
