BBG - Stocks ended sharply lower as concerns about inflation drove longer-dated bond yields to an almost two-decade high after the Federal Reserve refrained from raising interest rates but a trio of dissents signaled support for tighter monetary policy. The Federal Open Market Committee voted 9-3 to hold the benchmark federal funds rate in a range of 3.5% to 3.75%. Dallas Fed President Lorie Logan, Cleveland’s Beth Hammack and Minneapolis Fed chief Neel Kashkari dissented in favor of raising rates by a quarter percentage point. The S&P 500 fell 1.5%, with the gauge also pummeled by a rout in chipmakers. The Nasdaq 100 fell 2.1% to enter technical correction, extending a slide from a record to 11%. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index dropped 5.3%, its fifth straight session of declines. Treasury 30-year yields hit the highest since 2007. Brent crude topped $90. In late hours, Meta Platforms Inc. gave a disappointing forecast. Microsoft Corp.’s cloud unit posted a larger-than-expected increase in sales. WTI crude rose 6.9% after President Donald Trump reiterated that the US would hit Iran hard. The Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index fell 0.3%. The yield on 10-year Treasuries advanced 7 bps to 4.68%. Bitcoin fell 0.6%. Spot gold rose 0.6%. Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh insisted policymakers’ decision to leave interest rates unchanged wasn’t a sign of inertia at the central bank, which he reiterated is committed to tackling inflation. Warsh, in his second press conference, emphasized that markets will be freer under his chairmanship to chart their own course based on signals from the economy. With forward guidance curtailed, “participants are learning to play the ball and not the referee,” he said, noting that a tightening in financial conditions since the last press conference “provided us some comfort that we’ve got the ability and capability to deliver” on inflation. The absence of explicit forecasts - and Warsh’s nods to market autonomy - may have spurred volatility in bond rates.

FED PLAYBOOK: JPM'S S&P 500 SCENARIOS JPMorgan expects the Fed to hold rates, with a hawkish hold as its base case (50%), leaving the S&P 500 roughly flat to down 0.5%. A dovish hold (28%) is seen as the most bullish outcome, lifting the index up to 1%. A 25bp hike (20%) could send the S&P 500 down 1.5%-2%, with the Nasdaq likely underperforming.
