📍 Context:
✅ The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) highlighted Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) as a key climate indicator in its “State of the Global Climate 2025” report released on World Meteorological Day (23 March) (Theme: Observing Today, Protecting Tomorrow).
📍 What is Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI)?
✅ Definition: Difference between
➡️ Incoming solar radiation (after reflection) and
➡️ Outgoing long-wave radiation emitted back into space.
✅ Positive EEI: Earth gains more energy → Global warming.
✅ Negative EEI: Earth loses energy → Cooling trend.
✅ It reflects rate of heat accumulation in climate system mainly due to anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
📍 Reasons for Rising EEI
✅ Increasing GHG concentrations trapping heat.
✅ Reduction in aerosol emissions → Less sunlight reflection.
✅ Rise in trace gases & water vapour → Reduced outgoing radiation.
✅ Declining cloud reflectivity & shrinking sea ice lowering albedo.
📍 Other Key Findings (WMO Report)
✅ 2025 among top 2–3 warmest years, ~1.43°C above pre-industrial (1850–1900) levels.
✅ 2015–2025: Hottest 11-year period on record.
✅ CO₂ concentration (2024): Highest in last ~2 million years.
✅ Ocean heat content reached a new record high, indicating continued warming momentum.

Location: The Sea of Japan, or East Sea, is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean.
Boundaries: It is bounded by Russia and Sakhalin Island in the north, by North Korea in the west, South Korea in the southwest, and by the Japanese archipelago (Hokkaidō, Honshū, and Kyūshū islands) in the east and south.
Connections:
It is connected with the East China Sea via the Tsushima and Korea straits and with the Okhotsk Sea in the north by the La Perouse and Tatar straits.
In the east, it is connected with the Inland Sea of Japan via the Kanmon Strait and the Pacific Ocean by the Tsugaru Strait.
Deepest Point: Dohoku Seamount, an underwater volcano, is its deepest point.
Climate: Its relatively warm waters contribute greatly to the mild climate of Japan.
Tides: Like the Mediterranean Sea, it has almost no tides due to its nearly complete enclosure from the Pacific Ocean.
The sea is known for its high concentration of oxygen (dissolved in the seawater), which results in high biological productivity.
Major Ports:
Russia: Vladivostok, Sovetskaya Gavan, Nakhodka, Alexandrovsk-Sakhalinsky, and Kholmsk.
North Korea: Hamhung, Chongjin, and Wonsan.
