How to paraphrase in IELTS writing? Before discussing how to paraphrase, let's firstly learn what is paraphrasing... Paraphrasing simply means rewording. Usually in IELTS Writing Tasks in order to write a Background Statement in the introduction we paraphrase the essay question. We change the words that are given in the question and we present it with our own words. Look at this example: "The reason for increasing levels of pollution are the development of industry and air travel" - the question. "The causes of rising levels of pollution are the growth and expansion of industry as well as the number of people traveling by air" - paraphrased version. Well, now you see the difference... However, never and ever forget that too much of anything does have its negative effects! Read it again: too much of anything does have its negative effects! Too many students get a wrong idea of it or they overemphasize and overdo. As a result, there are even cases when a student attempts to paraphrase what can't be actually paraphrased thinking in their minds that THEY HAVE TO PARAPHRASE EVERY SINGLE WORD. When paraphrasing, one has to be very careful with word choice. If you are not sure about the meaning of a word for 100%, then, don't risk. Instead, a word can be changed in forms. For instance, verb can be changed into a noun, noun can be changed into a verb etc. One way or another, change the words, but KEEP THE MEANING AS IT IS!
