Austria in June 1945:
Several thousand soldiers from the Eastern Legions were loaded onto freight trains by the USA in the first months after the war and handed over to the Soviets.
At the end of the train journey, they were often faced with a firing squad from the NKVD or decades of imprisonment in Stalin's Gulag.
In contrast to the Russian Liberation Army (Vlasov Army), the Eastern Legions were units of the German Wehrmacht composed exclusively of members of the non-Russian minority peoples of the Soviet Union. These included military units made up of Kalmyks, Azerbaijanis, North Caucasians, Armenians, Georgians, Turkestanians, Crimean Tatars and Volga Tatars. The number of Eastern Legionnaires who switched from the Soviet to the German side is disputed. Russian historians estimate 40,000 - 50,000 volunteers, while Western historians estimate 100,000 volunteers. The majority of the legionnaires settled in the Munich area after 1945 and were financed by the Bavarian administration or later state government and provided with permanent papers as so-called "expellees". In order to avoid being convicted as collaborators, they did not return to the Soviet Union.

Walter "Nowi" Nowotny (Lebensrune.png December 7, 1920 in Gmünd, Waldviertel, Republic of Austria; Todesrune.png killed November 8, 1944 in Epe, Greater German Reich) was a German Wehrmacht officer, most recently a major and fighter pilot in the Luftwaffe and diamond recipient in World War II. The flying ace achieved 258 confirmed (and 23+ other unconfirmed) aerial victories in 443 (possibly up to 450) enemy flights with the Bf 109, the Fw 190 and the Me 262. Twice he managed ten kills in a single day. This makes Walter Nowotny the fifth most successful fighter pilot in military history. Without the enemy flight ban imposed in 1943, he would undoubtedly have achieved many more aerial victories.

In the RM since 29, he served on various T-boats, signed up for the U-boat force in 35, became chief helmsman on U 26 (Type I A, KptnLt W.Hartmann). From 37, an off-duty candidate, he served on "Graf Spee", came in Nov. 39 as Olt zS and 1. WO on U 37 (Type IX A, KKptn W.Hartmann). From Oct. 40, he led U 37 on three combat missions, became KptnLt in Jan. 41, and commissioned U 129 (Type IX C) in May. He made four combat missions with the boat before he commissioned U 182 (Type IX D2) in June 1942. From Horten/NOR he made a combat mission to the South Atlantic, where he was sunk by the destroyer USS "MacKenzie" with depth charges and artillery west of Madeira. There were no survivors.
On a total of eight combat missions he sank 23 ships with around 75,000 GRT, posthumously promoted to KKptn

was a German Luftwaffe officer, lastly first lieutenant, and highly decorated fighter pilot in World War II.
He trained as a fighter pilot in July 1939 with the Luftwaffe. He then joined Jagdgeschwader 51 and fought on the Eastern Front from June 1941. As a sergeant, he was awarded the German Cross in Gold on May 22, 1942 and the Knight's Cross on August 23, 1942.
He flew with the II. Group of Jagdgeschwader 51 in North Africa in November 1942, where he was able to achieve 20 more aerial victories in a short time. On June 1, 1943, he was promoted to lieutenant and flew with the III. Group of Jagdgeschwader 51 in Russia again. There he was awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross on April 11, 1944 after 134 aerial victories. In May 1944 he became captain of the 8th Squadron. On June 28, 1944 he achieved his 150th aerial victory. He achieved his 200th aerial victory on October 15, 1944. During an aerial combat on October 17, 1944, his Bf 109 hit a tree near Gumbinnen and crashed to his death. In 795 combat missions he achieved 204 confirmed aerial victories.
