Farming has become a less popular career choice for the majority of young people. This can be attributed to technological advancements coupled with a shift in job market dynamics, and I firmly believe encouraging young people to engage in farming practices has numerous benefits for individuals.
Technological revolution of the last century has transformed many facets of our lives. It especially had a profound impact on the agricultural sector through mechanization and automation. This transformation, on top of increasing production efficiency, greatly reduced the need for manual labor, prompting many people to seek employment in other sectors.
These changes coincided with shifts in the job market. There is now demand for other sets of skills and expertise, just as farming was once the most sought-after career path. Many young people therefore are now drawn to careers in industries that offer higher salaries and more financial stability compared to farming, such as finance, marketing, and information technology.
While farming may be perceived as less attractive, it offers several benefits for young people. Firstly, as it involves physical work that can promote health and fitness, farming can serve as an ideal counterbalance to the sedentary nature of modern office jobs. Typical office work, for example, involves sitting in one place for prolonged hours with limited exercise. Engaging in farming at least on weekends or during holidays can curb the effects of an inactive lifestyle.
The positive effects of doing farm work often go beyond mere physical fitness. The role of such engagement in improving mental well-being is usually understated. Farming not only offers a screen-free environment but also an opportunity to connect with nature – factors long associated with reduced stress levels, increased personal and professional motivation, and boosted productivity. These benefits highlight the importance of encouraging young people to engage in farming.
In conclusion, the main reasons why farming among young people fell out of favor are the technological improvements and the change in job market. Despite this, I tend to think that young people should be encouraged to do farming as it can improve both physical and mental health.
