Ruiz de Alda Julio Ruiz de Alda Miqueleiz, born on 7 October 1897 in Estella-Lizarra and died on 23 August 1936 in Madrid, was a Spanish aviator and politician, pioneer of aviation and co-founder, with José Antonio Primo de Rivera, of the Spanish Falange In 1926 he became a national hero when he flew the "Plus Ultra" (Dornier Wal) seaplane on a transatlantic flight. His co-pilot was Ramón Franco; the other crew members were Ensign Juan Manuel Durán and mechanic Pablo Rada. The Plus Ultra took off from Palos de la Frontera, province of Huelva (Spain) on 22 January and arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina on 26 January. It made stops in Gran Canaria, Cape Verde, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro and Montevideo. The 10.270 km journey was completed in 59 hours and 39 minutes. The event appeared in most of the major newspapers in all countries. Throughout the Spanish-speaking world, the Spanish aviators are frantically acclaimed, especially in Argentina and Spain, where thousands of people gather in Christopher Columbus Square in Madrid. He participated in the foundation of the "Spanish Falange and the J.O.N.S." and after the national uprising of July 18, 1936, he was imprisoned in the model prison of Madrid. Italo Balbo Italo Balbo (born in Ferrara on 6 June 1896, died in Tobruk on 28 June 1940) was an Italian politician, military officer and aviator. He was Minister of Aeronautics and Governor of Italian Libya. After the war, Balbo joined Fascism and soon became secretary of the Fascist Federation of Ferrara. He began to organise gangs of squadristi and formed his own group nicknamed "Celibano", after his favourite drink. In October 1922, he was part of the "quadrumvirs" during the march on Rome, with Emilio De Bono, Cesare Maria De Vecchi and Michele Bianchi On 6 November 1926, Italo Balbo was appointed Secretary of State for Aviation. He quickly reorganised the Royal Air Force (Regia Aeronautica) and learned to fly. On 19 August 1928, he became Air Force Marshal and on 12 September 1929, at only 33 years old, he became the youngest European Minister of Aviation. Balbo made two landmark transatlantic flights. The first was from 17 December 1930 to 15 January 1931, with fourteen Savoia-Marchetti S.55A seaplanes, which left from Orbetello air base, near Rome, for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Italo Balbo used Savoia-Marchetti S.55 seaplanes for his transatlantic flights to Brazil in 1930-31, and to Canada and the United States in 1933. There are 8 civilian and military versions of the S.55, and 243 of these seaplanes were built between 1925 and the mid-1930s. For the second flight, from 1 July to 12 August 1933, Marshal Balbo flew 25 Savoia-Marchetti S.55X seaplanes from Rome to Chicago, where the World's Fair "A Century of Progress" was held. In addition to participating in the World Fair in a spectacular way, the air marshal's aim was to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Benito Mussolini's fascist regime in a dignified manner. This is indicated by the 'X' in the name of the model of aircraft used, the S.55X. Balbo was then appointed Governor General of Libya, where he went in January 1934 He carried out public works there and built road networks, in particular the 1,822 km long coastline. This will be named in his honour the via Balbia. He sought to attract Italian settlers and followed a policy of integration and pacification of the Muslim populations. Mermoz, Balbo, Ruiz de Alda: when the sky was fascist! On 13 May 1930 the first airmail crossing of the South Atlantic was completed. A Latécoère seaplane, piloted by Jean Mermoz, flew from Saint-Louis-du-Sénégal to Natal, Brazil, in 52 hours. Three years earlier, the same aviator had made the first Toulouse-Dakar connection. On the occasion of this anniversary, let us briefly recall who these heroes were who conquered the skies of the world. Jean Mermoz Jean Mermoz, born in Aubenton or Guise (Aisne) on 9 December 1901 and disappeared in the Atlantic Ocean on 7 December 1936, was a French aviator, a legendary figure of l'Aéropostale, nicknamed the "Archangel". He was also one of the founders in 1936 of the French Social Party (PSF) with Colonel de La Rocque. Between 1930 and 1936, Mermoz made twenty-three crossings of the South Atlantic, on aircraft as diverse as the Latécoère 28.3, 300 and 301 seaplanes, Blériot 5190 Santos-Dumont, and other land-based aircraft, Couzinet Arc-en-Ciel or the four-engined Farman F.220. He disappeared on board the four-engine Latécoère 300 seaplane, the "Croix-du-Sud", on 7 December 1936. The last message in Morse code, sent from the Croix-du-Sud, was: "Coupons moteur arrière droit" or "Avons coupé moteur arrière droit", without any further details. Despite the search, the wreckage was never found.
