AI could replace teachers, says an influential entrepreneur in a Youtube interview. He’s all for freedom but seemingly unbothered by machines teaching kids. Yet, some tasks—like forming young minds—can’t be handed to AI without losing something vital.
Teaching isn’t just data synthesis—AI can do that. It’s about apprenticeship, modeling thought, and hands-on practice. Just as an athlete needs a coach, in a similar way students need teachers to sharpen their minds through dialogue, practice and focused effort.
AI can now write papers from prompts, mimicking human work. But this skips the mental “heavy-lifting”—the real learning. The end product looks the same, but the student’s mind doesn’t grow. That’s the danger we confront.
Traditional teaching tools like take-home papers are obsolete with AI. We can't reasonably expect students to voluntarily renounce the competitive advantage it gives them, and policing it is near impossible.
Teachers must rethink learning for an AI age. Oral exams, longer tech-free tests, or ungraded challenges (to reduce the incentive to lean on AI) could replace traditional teaching & assessment methods. We must not let AI shortcuts subvert the learning process.
We worry about AI stealing jobs, but surely the bigger threat is a degraded learning process. If minds are not well formed, we may enter an intellectual dark age. Teachers and schools must act fast to avert such a catastrophic outcome. | 3 630 |

I wrote about Adolescence – or rather the (manufactured) hype surrounding it – last week. I thought at the time I’d said all that needed to be said. It is just some Netflix show, after all.
But then the hype keeps going, and the messaging piles up, and you realize it’s actually a really neat case study in The Way Things Work.
As a quick catch-up for the fortunate few yet to have Adolescence forcibly crammed in front of their eyes, the show is about a boy who stabs a girl at school. It’s said to raise “important questions”…...
