Megan Ginn, a recent Fashion Design graduate from Birmingham City University, specializes in sustainable fashion, blending traditional Irish influences with cutting-edge biomaterial innovation. Her project draws inspiration from Aran knitwear and incorporates a unique algae-based biomaterial she developed to fuse wool to fabric. This bio-textile is not only distinctive in appearance but also transformative—it can be reheated and reshaped, allowing garments to evolve with each wearer. Employing zero-waste pattern cutting and one-of-a-kind designs, Megan proves that eco-conscious fashion can be both cool and chic. #BeOpenDESIGN

#BeOpenDESIGN Donatas Žukauskas’s TRIPOD Tables transform recycled paper pulp and cardboard into sturdy, wood-like side tables that combine sustainability with striking natural textures. Through innovative material experimentation, Žukauskas creates a durable composite that mimics the strength and tactile richness of wood while offering slight elasticity to resist damage. The mottled surfaces and minimalist tripod forms deliver both aesthetic appeal and practical longevity, making these eco-friendly tables a compelling alternative to traditional furniture that emphasizes environmental responsibility without sacrificing style or function. #BeOpenDESIGN Tokyo-based designer Tsujio Ippei @tsujio_ippei explores the intersection of graphic design, material texture, and visual humor with Bakermee, a series of wrapping papers that visually and tactilely reference baked goods. The collection includes three distinct A2 sheets—each patterned after a different type of bread—and is designed to fit various shapes and package sizes. What distinguishes the project is not only its playful visual language but also the use of coarse-textured paper to evoke the tactile feel of real crusts, enhancing the illusion. #BeOpenDESIGN Halfgrid is a visionary urban transport concept by Bulgaria-based Half Company that reimagines personal mobility through a network of AI-powered, one-person capsules suspended on static cables above city streets. Designed to bypass ground-level congestion, each pod can be summoned via an app, offering direct, silent, and emissions-free travel to any destination within the grid. Unlike traditional cable cars, Halfgrid allows for independent routing and individual scheduling, merging the convenience of ridesharing with the efficiency of aerial transit. It’s a futuristic yet plausible response to traffic-choked cities, blending smart design with scalable infrastructure. More cutting-edge public transportation concepts on our blog.

#BeOpenARCH The 2025 Serpentine Pavilion, A Capsule in Time by Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum, is a serene, light-filled structure that explores impermanence, community, and architectural afterlife. Composed of four arched glulam timber “half-capsules” arranged around a central courtyard, the pavilion invites natural light and airflow through translucent polycarbonate panels inspired by South Asian ceremonial tents. Designed from the outset to be dismantled and repurposed as a library, the pavilion emphasizes sustainability not just in materials but in intent, offering a quiet yet powerful model of architecture as both a seasonal gathering space and a future civic resource. #BeOpenART Artist Cheng Tsung FENG revitalizes the traditional Taiwanese craft of fish trap weaving through a community-driven art project in Taichung. Inviting hundreds of local participants with no prior experience, he led workshops to teach the intricate bamboo weaving technique, resulting in over two hundred woven fish trap baskets. These baskets, each tagged with the maker’s personal wishes, were assembled into a large-scale installation for the Taiwan Lantern Festival, symbolizing unity and cultural heritage. After the festival, the baskets were returned to their creators, inspiring new uses and preserving the craft not only as a tangible art form but as a shared, embodied cultural memory that bridges past traditions with contemporary life.

#BeOpenARCH Designed by Switzerland-based Mexican architect Rubén Valdez, Spiritual Enclosure is a contemplative circular structure set in the desert of Todos Santos, Mexico. Commissioned by Paradero Hotels as a non-religious ceremonial space, the sunken concrete ring subtly emerges from the terrain, framing the sky and distant mountains. Accessed through a gradually turning ramp, the space fosters a slow, reflective entry. Inside, raw materials, wooden benches, and a polished obsidian disc—referencing Mesoamerican spiritual tools—anchor the minimal interior. Oriented east to west, the enclosure uses shifting light and shadow to mark time, reinforcing its quiet connection to place and ritual.

#BeOpenARCH Byró Architekti, a Czech architecture studio, has designed the Garden Pavilion, a compact wooden outbuilding in Prague, using the footprint of a former dilapidated cottage as a reference point. Positioned at the end of a garden near the Vltava River, the pavilion serves as a seasonal retreat and shelter, featuring a foldable polycarbonate wall concealed behind charred timber shutters. This operable facade, managed via a system of pulleys and counterweights, allows the structure to open toward the landscape, blending interior and exterior while offering protection from the elements. Clad in blackened timber using the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, the pavilion’s exterior references surrounding dark-toned cottages. Inside, a restrained material palette of plaster and wood defines the space, which includes a mezzanine sleeping loft and integrated shelving. Sustainable features such as photovoltaic panels and thoughtful daylighting complete the minimalist, garden-oriented design.

#BeOpenARCH The 3-to-1 Pavilion by Chinese studio Temp is a sculptural garden retreat in Shanghai that blends minimalist geometry with traditional craftsmanship. Designed as a meditative space for tea, conversation, and quiet reflection, the pavilion unfolds along a triangular plan that guides visitors from open gathering areas to a narrow, contemplative point framing the surrounding landscape. Constructed entirely from charred timber using traditional tenon joints, its louvred walls filter light and shadow throughout the day, creating a dynamic, sensory atmosphere. With its blend of spatial precision and material depth, the pavilion stands as a quiet dialogue between architecture, ritual, and nature. More boundary-pushing garden structures on our blog.

#BeOpenDESIGN Ninho by Atelier Marko Brajovic is a bio-urban installation that reimagines city life as a shared habitat for humans and wildlife. Installed in São Paulo’s Parque da Água Branca for Casacor 2025, the nest-like structure is crafted from pinewood and recycled plastic, inviting visitors to recline, observe the sky, and reconnect with nature. Inspired by the architectural brilliance of birds and insects, Ninho blends ecological design with gentle provocation, asking us to rethink urban spaces as multispecies ecosystems. Accompanied by the Animal Architects Exhibition, it celebrates non-human intelligence and proposes a future where cities are built not just for people — but with nature. Nigerian designer Paul Yakubu has created the Umbrella Crate Stall, a modular trading structure designed to optimize space in crowded street markets. Combining an umbrella with adjustable crates, the design allows goods to be displayed at varying angles for better visibility and easy access. The modular system is scalable, enabling traders to add units as their business grows, while the wheels make it easy to transport and store. Developed through research on informal markets in Nigeria and refined during a residency in France, Yakubu's design aims to bring more organization, flexibility, and efficiency to street trading. He is currently testing the prototype in Lagos and seeking partners for mass production. #BeOpenDESIGN

#BeOpenDESIGN Designer Yves Béhar has partnered with additive manufacturing company Forust to create Vine, a sustainable homeware collection 3D printed from sawdust and natural tree-sap binder. The range—featuring a vessel, bowl, tray, and basket—transforms wood industry waste into durable, wood-like forms using a high-resolution binder jetting process. Unlike conventional woodworking, this method allows for intricate geometries and minimal material waste, marking a shift from subtractive to circular design. Béhar sees the process as a scalable, eco-conscious alternative that could extend to furniture and architectural elements, offering a new paradigm for sustainable, on-demand production.

#BeOpenART At Clerkenwell Design Week in London, artist Alex Chinneck has unveiled A Week at the Knees—a surreal, freestanding installation that reimagines a Georgian townhouse seemingly bending to sit on its own knees. Located in Charterhouse Square, the 5.5-metre-high, 13.5-metre-long sculpture playfully distorts traditional architecture using 7,000 brick slips and 320 metres of steel, all shaped into rippling forms with bespoke warped windows and pipework. This ambitious work not only pushes material boundaries, but also speaks to themes of creative freedom, urban whimsy, and architectural defiance in an increasingly risk-averse world.
