Designed by New Zealand artist Mike Hewson, Rocks On Wheels is a regional-scale public art playground in Melbourne. Consisting of more than 300 ton of raw Victorian bluestone boulders resting on seemingly flimsy domestic scale dollies invisibly engineered to support extreme loads, the project has been developed as an inclusive playground that challenges play design norms, exhibits world-class excellence in terms of play value, conceptual rigour and material durability. The flooring is custom-design soft-fall that mimics the distinctive City of Melbourne bluestone paving standard detail.

As part of the Palais Garnier’s renovation, the Opéra National de Paris invited French artist JR to transform the scaffolding on the historic landmark in the heart of the French capital into the entrance of a vast cave that opens to a passage filled with rocks and light. The cave beckons viewers to peer inside, invoking Plato’s allegory of the cave - a place where the exit leads to knowledge and an understanding of the world.
Retour à la caverne continues JR’s trompe l’oeil projects, which have taken over iconic sites such as the Louvre Museum, the Trocadero Esplanade, the Farnese Palace in Rome and the Strozzi Palace in Florence. Each installation is an invitation for viewers to change their perspective.
The installation will be open to the public until from September 25th, 2023.

Creating the project of a co-working space in the outskirts of Pune, India, local architecture studio PMA Madhushala has wrapped the façade in a grid of natural red sandstone planters as an efficient and environmentally conscious solution for hot semi-arid climates. This design feature not only brings life and greenery into the internal environment but also enlivens the surrounding neighborhood, creating a lively and natural aesthetic. The building’s envelope is divided into smaller concrete modules, which allows for easier construction.

Paris-based street artists Ella and Pitr are known for their gigantic figures they create on cities around the world. Part of their latest series of sleeping giants, the new piece titled The Shipwreck of Bienvenue has appeared on the side of a 47-meter high concrete dam in the rural French countryside, near the small village of La Valla-en-Gier near St-Etienne. The work took five people working on rope and two weeks to complete.

Architecture studio Dazhou and Associates has used a delicate scaffolding structure for M Pavilion, a small coffee shop situated within the lobby of an office building in Xuhui district, Shanghai. The use of scaffolding allowed the studio to rapidly construct the coffee shop, restricting the construction process to just 10 days. The architects came up with an adaptive system with only one component prototype and very few variations. This system covers all aspects including structure, envelope, bar worktops, lighting, and foundation floor, making it possible to ensure both beauty and functionality through this rapid procedure.

Envisioned by architect Thilina Liyanage, the Safari Park Observation Deck is a concept for a series of raised platforms where tourists can enjoy breathtaking views of the nature reserve from a safe vantage point. The project comprises several decks with a staircase that leads to the platform shaped like a massive mountain sheep’s head that stands out against the green backdrop. From here, visitors can get the most scenic view of the safari park ahead of them. The structure uses a combination of metal girders for an underlying framework, and warped bamboo for the details.

Named Pocket Chair, the furniture is a smart storage solution for those dealing with is space constraints in their own homes. The chair is also perfect for restaurants, hotel lobbies, and waiting rooms, as it eliminates the need for tables, and creates a tidy and organized space. The chair has stable steel legs and a shell of environmentally friendly PurCore covered with soft foam, upholstered in fabric or leather.

Designed by Czech architect and fire survivor Přemysl Kokeš, the Hussechuck and Shield fire extinguishers completely redefine conventional design of the life-saving device. The user is supposed to slip their left arm into the strap and use a trigger to release the fire retardant from the front opening hole. This solution enables the user to operate it with a single arm, using the other arm to hold something else. Besides, the devices offer a variety of stylish covers, including some with a self-extinguishing textile surface, that turn them into decorative pieces for the interior.

Bangkok studio Looklen Architects has wrapped the building of The Pomelo Amphawa Cafe in Thailand in a circular volume formed of concrete steps and timber planters. The structure rises from the ground level and reaches roof height at the back of the building to allow guests to access a rooftop deck. The steps double up as casual amphitheatre-style seating, which makes them suitable for hosting events. Inspired by the traditional Thai house, the space under the amphitheatre resembles Tāithun – a semi-outdoor space under a Thai House – where public activities can be engaged with during daytime while being protected from the sunlight.

Local studio Davide Macullo Architects has completed ten wooden pavilions nestled within the woodlands of the village of Rossa, Switzerland. Titled Ispace, the architectural series forms part of the wider work of the RossArte Foundation, giving the valley an identity as a destination for work and life, as well as for tourism. The project is defined by the selection of native material (locally sourced larchwood), the purity of design thinking and the almost absence of particular construction techniques, which seeks to emphasize the centrality of the relationship between man and nature.

To commemorate Porsche's 75th anniversary, London-based artist Gerry Judah has created a 28-metres-high steel sculpture that comprises three curved hoops and six soaring arms topped with classic Porsche models that represent milestones in the brand's history. Commissioned by Anthony Vaccarello for French fashion house Saint Laurent, renowned contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang set off about 40,000 daytime fireworks in tribute to those who lost their lives in tragedies, including the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Coronavirus pandemic. Entitled When the Sky Blooms with Sakura, the artwork was launched in three visual sequences carefully arranged to compose different pictures aiming to convey a message of hope and renaissance. The event was live-streamed on Saint Laurent’s website and broadcasted worldwide through various physical and digital platforms.

Architecture and product design studio ElasticoFarm has created a corrugated aluminium-clad house elevated on orange tree-like metal stilts in a private park in northern Italy. The dwelling is aptly named The Hole with the House Around, for it is organised around the void at its centre, connecting internal spaces across the assemblage of separate prefabricated volumes with a continuous pathway of ramps and stairs. The house is accessed directly from the park, with a suspended open metal staircase leading up to the elevated home.

London-based immersive experience studio led by Meredith O’Shaughnessy has proposed to repurpose multi-storey car parks in urban settings into luxury retail and entertainment spaces. Called The Crossing, her project features a whiskey bar where guests can enjoy Bentley honey-infused cocktails. As a nod to the building's former use as a car park, the design would feature an undulating driving track that extends around the building and onto the roof.

Local practice DEAR Studio has reimagined the traditional local hay barns as a contemporary extension of Hotel Jaufentalerhof in northern Italy. The development comprises two interconnected three-story structures with gable roofs, wrapped in larch logs arranged in rhythmic overlapping layers, shielding floor-to-ceiling glass facades situated behind it. The intertwining of the locally sourced tree trunks, with every second horizontal trunk omitted, creates a monolithic yet permeable structure.

BE OPEN Art is happy to announce that Dabi Arnasa, an artist based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, has become the second of the three candidates to the title of the Regional artist (Southeast Asia) and the 500 euros prize. She has been selected the Regional Artist of the month (August) by the highest number of votes of BE OPEN Art online gallery visitors.
After one more monthly winners is defined in September, the BE OPEN Art expert team will select the one winner who best represents the artistic tradition of Southeast Asia: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Irene Moutsoyiannis and Christos Ververis, a creative young duo from Greece known as the Koukos de Lab project, craft furniture utilizing olive pits. The duo has come up with the idea during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they developed an innovative ‘koukoutsi eco-material’ derived from olive pits, which is highly durable and water resistant. Taking inspiration from traditional designs, they create functional pieces, such as countertops, coffee tables and stools that are suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Koukos’s approach aligns with the contemporary zero-waste movement to minimize environmental impact.

Israeli design studio Zalkind has developed a special joint that consists of two wooden dowels that are locked into a pipe using pressure, without the need for glue or screws. The project that features bench, chair and coat rack is aptly named Internal Pressure. In the chair design, the leg and armrest meet and are locked into place by the seat of the chair. When the user sits on it, it tightens the pressure on the joint.

Portuguese practice Bernardo Rodrigues Architects has completed a studio for a sculptor in the Azores that overlooks the garden through projecting hexagonal windows. The team has opted for poured concrete to create the sculpture-like form of the building because it is the most similar to the clay sculptures the client makes. Besides, it is common on the Sāo Miguel island and easy to mould in curves that adapted best to the site relation. According to the architects, the hexagonal glazing “makes the studio a camera obscura, light clock, or photographic skull chamber of sorts.”
