Strait of Hormuz - 47% of India oil pass through this route 🔴Why has the Strait of Hormuz been in the news? Due to escalating Iran-Israel conflict, particularly after the Israel-Gaza war. - Iran is involved via Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, and other militant groups. - Recent military strikes between Israel and Iran have intensified tensions. - Two oil tankers collided recently, raising global concerns, though sabotage was ruled out. - The strait remains a leverage point in Iran’s international negotiations. 🌍 What’s at stake in the Strait of Hormuz? - It's a critical chokepoint for global oil trade: - 20% of the world’s oil supply passes through it. At its narrowest, it is 33 km wide. - 90% of India’s oil is imported, with 47% passing through the Strait. - Disruption would cause oil prices to surge ($100–150/barrel). - Liquefied natural gas exports would also be hit; 20% of global output is from this region. 🌐 The geopolitical status - Falls within territorial waters of Oman, Iran, UAE. - The US Fifth Fleet (based in Bahrain) ensures operational control. - The Combined Task Force (CTF 150) patrols the region with contributions from the US, UK, Canada, France, and others. ⚠️ Can Iran close the Strait? - Iran has threatened to shut it in response to tensions. - Iran could use mines, submarines, and speed boats, though such a blockade could take weeks or months to enforce. - Such a move would provoke military retaliation, especially from the US. 🔁 Are there any alternatives? - Saudi Arabia and UAE have pipelines to bypass the Strait: - Saudi’s East-West Pipeline can transport 5 million barrels/day. - UAE’s Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline carries oil to Fujairah (1.5 million b/d capacity). - Alternatives are limited and would significantly increase shipping time and costs.
