RBI’s August 6, 2025 monetary policy decision Decision * RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.50%. * Policy stance: Neutral — neither in an aggressive easing nor tightening mode. * They already cut rates by 1% earlier in 2025, so they’re letting those cuts filter into the economy. Economic Conditions * Inflation: Down to 2.1% in June (lowest in 6 years). → RBI lowered its annual forecast from 3.7% to 3.1%. * Growth: GDP projected at 6.5% for FY 2025–26, driven by consumer demand, government spending, and festive-season momentum. Global Risks * Donald Trump’s tariffs: 25% duty on Indian imports (effective Aug 1), with threats of more if India keeps buying Russian oil. * The rupee is hovering just above its all-time low (₹87.95$). * Cutting rates now could weaken the rupee further and make imports more expensive.

India’s Strategic Pushback in Diplomacy with the US and EU India has increasingly asserted its strategic autonomy in global diplomacy, pushing back against pressure from both the US and European Union when national interests are at stake. In response to President Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on Indian goods and penalties over Russian defence and energy imports, India firmly defended its position. MEA called the targeting "unjustified and unreasonable," vowing to protect national interests. Over the past three years, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has consistently challenged Western narratives: Highlighted Europe's continued oil imports from Russia despite calls for sanctions. Stated that India's energy purchases from Russia were minimal compared to Europe's. Criticised Europe’s expectation that global problems should be addressed selectively. Asserted that India seeks partners, not preachers, particularly those who don’t practice what they preach. Historically, India has navigated complex US ties. From Nixon's 1971 pro-Pakistan stance to post-Pokhran sanctions in 1998 and the Devyani Khobragade incident in 2013, India has responded with measured but firm diplomacy. Today, amid aggressive US rhetoric and pressure, India is balancing engagement with assertion—preserving its sovereignty and strategic choices while maintaining essential partnerships.
